Leatherhead

A
well balanced match saw The Hillians field 5 fifteen year
olds to battle it out against a more experienced Leatherhead
side at Leylands Park.
Both sides passed well at times but between them only managed
to produce a few half-chances in front of goal. As half
time approached fast, both sides battled for the majority
of the possession without real success.
Although Leatherhead opened the scoring mid-way through
the second half, it was Burgess Hill who should have scored
when Louis Foreman struck the bar after a sweeping move,
which ended in an agonising finish for the home side.
Leatherhead then began to get more confident into their
team and as legs began to tire and substitutes were used,
Leatherhead's second half substitute scored his second goal
of the game to effectively seal the result for the visitors.
Considering the emerging young talent being blooded by Burgess
Hill Town Youth, it can be considered another step in the
development of youth football at this club and can only
bode well in the future.

After
beating Polegate Grasshoppers in the first round, Crawley
Down were up next to face the Young Hillians.
Burgess Hill took a while to settle in to the match and
found themselves 1-0 down half way through the first period
through an unfortunate goal that defender Jack Finch did
everything to prevent. Striker Louis Forman managed to get
a few shots away but was unable to grab a goal back for
Burgess Hill.
After the break, Town showed their better side and were
having most of the possession in the early stages. The game
then turned into end-to-end football, although Town still
had the edge over the home side. Finally, inside the last
15 minutes, Finn MacMillan struck a shot with his left foot
from outside the 18-yard box which flew into the far bottom
corner for his second goal in consecutive rounds. MacMillan
was then involved in a 50-50 tackle which resulted in a
swollen ankle after Town had used both their permitted substitutes.
This meant Burgess Hill would have to play the rest of this
match with 10 players.
Nothing between these sides meant an extra 30 minutes were
needed to separate them. Roughly 10 minutes in, Conner Catton
slid into a tackle and unfortunately missed the ball to
bring down a Crawley Down striker, a penalty was awarded.
Keeper Shameer Cadamally capped a brilliant performance
by saving the penalty but unfortunately parried it back
into the path of the taker who made no mistake second time
around.
In the second half of extra time, Burgess Hill had the majority
of the possession and did everything but score. Finally,
Lewis Taylor found space on the right wing to receive the
ball, dribbled into the box at defenders which caused one
to trip him up, a penalty was awarded to Burgess Hill. Joe
Sinclair took responsibility and struck the ball down the
centre of the goal whilst the keeper dived out of the way.
As the end of extra time was nearing, penalties looked to
be deciding this match. Suddenly, the ball flew in from
the left wing across the Town penalty box towards a Crawley
Down striker which he controlled with his lower arm, Burgess
Hill appealed for handball but nothing was given, the player
then went on to strike the ball across goal past the outstretched
Cadamally.
Burgess Hill were gutted to have lost the match just seconds
from the end, although doing well to hold on for as long
as they did with 10 players. On another day Hill would have
won comfortably and gone through to the 3rd round.

The
Young Hillians went into their 3rd League match hoping to
grab their first points of the season, after previously
starting brightly, but fading badly towards the end of the
first two matches at this level. The first period saw two
determined sides evenly matched, but Horsham took the initiative
through two vey good deliveries from set pieces, so an unlucky
Burgess Hill found themselves two nil down at half time.
Lessons needed to be quickly learned and this young side
which again contained three 15 year olds, including Tom
Stillwell who had been drafted in from the Under 16's, needed
a concerted and determined effort to avoid another defeat.
Matt Daniel gave his side the belief that only comes with
goals when he netted from an improving Banister's sharp
cross. Hillians pushed on from here and were now right on
top of their game enjoying the majority of possession. Then
Louis Forman, who again worked hard all night got the ball
down the left and sent over a cross which was expertly finished
by Lewis Taylor at the far post. The boys created more opportunities
and could have gone on to win the game, but in the end were
happy to grab their first point, especially after coming
from behind.

Just
fourteen boys travelled to Polegate this week for the first
round of the County Cup. Burgess Hill were without a number
of players from the previous week, including three injuries.
However, this gave an opportunity to Fabian Mowatt, Alex
McCreadie and Carl Daly to make their debuts for the club.
A hard and uneven pitch made it difficult for both teams
to play football. After a settling down period, Town should
have taken the lead on at least two occasions. However,
club captain James Marks made a name for himself by finishing
casually into the bottom corner inside the first 20 minutes.
Burgess Hill continued to press and earned themselves a
second goal, scored by striker Finn MacMillan with his weaker
foot from outside the penalty area.
Joe Sinclair added another goal just before half time with
a left foot finish from 6 yards into the near corner.
After the break, Polegate came out looking more confident
and managed to grab a goal inside the first 5 minutes, which
goalkeeper Mowatt could do nothing to avoid. Town then took
control again, and Sinclair grabbed a further goal after
beating his defender and finishing into the roof of the
net.
It is fair to say that Burgess Hill deserved their victory
and go through to play another away match against Crawley
Down in the next round.

The
Youth Squad played had their first taste of FA Cup action
at the Memorial Sports Ground in Carshalton.
In similar style to the game at Eastbourne, the boys started
brightly and could have taken the lead through 2 or 3 decent
efforts. However it was not to be and Carshalton grabbed
two goals before half time.
During the second half however, the home sides' class began
to shine through as they dominated the midfield and created
a number of opportunities for their grateful forwards. Two
further goals emanating from unforced errors caused by inexperience
on the part of the young Town side saw the game slip away
from the visitors mid way through the second period.
Credit should be given to this very young side which included
3 fifteen year olds who kept their composure and heads up
throughout to the admiration of their opponents.

Fifteen
of the newly assembled Youth Squad travelled to Eastbourne
to undertake their first game at Ryman League level.
The starting eleven included goalkeeper Matthew Skeet, who
had only signed days before the match having been spotted
playing against Town the previous weekend in a friendly
game against Hassocks under 18's. Also starting were two
15 year olds Lance Avery and Matthew Daniel.
After a settling down period Town played some very attractive
flowing football and should have taken the lead on at least
two occasions. However, the team came in at half time a
goal down having been the better of the two sides.
The boys continued playing good football during the second
half as driving rain and strong winds picked up worked against
them.
Although substitutions were made to combat mental and physical
exhaustion, the Town boys could do nothing to stop a further
two goals in the second half.
This vey new squad came out of their first Ryman league
with much credit and promise not to mention several accolades
from watching officials from both Clubs.
