Burgess Hill Town FC 2 -0 Eastbourne Town FC

(Lloyd Cotton, Richard Greenfield)

25th August 2008

Manager Jamie Howell can celebrate his 50th appearance for Burgess Hill after another good performance.

Below, Lloyd Cotton blasts the ball across the keeper for the first goal.

The Mid Sussex Times report ...... Another win for Hillians ... After opening their winning account in style at Whitstable on Saturday, Burgess Hill followed up with a comfortable 2-0 derby victory at home to Eastbourne Town.
It took them until stoppage time at the end of the first half to break the deadlock but by then they had created enough chances to have had the points in the bag.
With Albion youngster Kane Louis offering pace and movement up front and helping take some of the heat off skipper Steve Harper, Hillians played with plenty of new-found confidence.
Harper missed a great early chance and then forced a smart save from Russ Tanner, while Richard Greenfield hit the bar with a cross-cum-shot and plenty of other chances went begging before Lloyd Cotton struck with an angled drive to send the hosts in with a well deserved half-time lead.
They were not so impressive after the break and Town came more into the game, with Gary Brockwell always looking comfortable on the ball.
But Hillians always had the edge and more or less settled the issue with their second goal on 61 minutes. Referee Warren Atkin played a good advantage as Louis played in Greenfield out on the right and he scored with a low drive.
Town had their moments up front but could have no complaints about the final result.

New signing : We have signed the young Brighton & Hove Albion professional Kane Louis, initially on a months loan.

Kane, a striker, has been doing very well in Brighton's Reserves and Youth team and will go straight into the squad for Saturday's trip to Whitstable Town. Manager Jamie Howell said he was delighted to get the season started with a point earlier in the week and now looked forward to the upcoming holiday weekend and the chance to add more points and really get the season started and back on track.

Excepts from a good Argus interview with Andy Naylor (click for full article) ...

The former Dorothy Stringer pupil, spotted playing for Hove Park Colts at the age of ten, has developed into a promising forward following a spell as a central midfielder like his father.

He has already started a couple of games in the reserves and was named by former manager Dean Wilkins in the senior squad for the FA Cup tie against Stafford Rangers two seasons ago.

Louis said: "I like getting the ball to feet and turning, finding nice little passes or taking people on.

"I should get more goals but I like setting people up as well. I like to be buzzing all the time.

"I support West Ham and I used to like Jermain Defoe. I was annoyed when he went. I always looked up to him and Joe Cole. I like players that play with freedom - they just look happier."

The Mid Sussex Times saw it like this 'Poor start for Hillians' ... It was a disappointing start to the Ryman League football season for Burgess Hill on saturday as they lost 2-0 at home to Leatherhead. There was not much to choose between the teams in a goalless first half but after the break Hillians gifted the visitors both goals.
A bad error by new keeper Craig Stoner presented Burgess Hill old boy Stewart Holmes with the first on 54 minutes and then a complete misunderstanding in defence enabled the impressive Tommy Hutchins to lob Stoner after 78 minutes.
As in their pre-season friendlies, Hillians looked like they will struggle to score goals although they appeared fairly solid elsewhere.
The closest they came to scoring was a minute before the killer second goal when skipper Steve Harper hit a post after good work by Ben johnson and player-manager Jamie Howell.

News ... #11

Burgess Hill player/coach Stuart Tuck fractured his ankle during Tuesday's friendly.

It may be that Stuart came down on an old hairline fracture, he will be in plaster for some weeks.

Stuart had been so keen to come back strong this season and has been working hard on his fitness. Colin Hunwick told the website that Stuart even tried to run it off !!!

Having spoken to him, I'm certain we'll benefit from his total enthusiasm and experience from the dugout and at training sessions. He is so disappointed at not being able to play for a while, but that at least his involvement can continue at close quarters.

He was at training last night hobbling on crutches and shouting encouragement at players !!

More new faces will be on show as well. Jason Surtees who was with Edgware Town and has moverd into the area and, Charlie Balfe a player from Bognor who has also relcoated to the Brighton area.

It was a much better display & Harper scored from the spot .... picture

RIP Jim Thompson

Jim Thompson

It is with great sadness that the club has to announce the death of former Manger JimThompson.

Jim Thompson had become a cornerstone of the Club over the last few seasons. Working closely with Peter Miles and Gary Croydon to establish the club in the Isthmian league, particularly with the up and coming players, he will be sadly missed by all the Club.

At this time our thoughts are with his Family & Friends.

Gary Croydon had this to say ...

"Jim Thompson loved football and for those of us who were privileged to work with him, he will be a huge loss a true Gentleman of the game and irreplaceable."
