Over
150 people turned up for the first ever Burgess Hill Town FC
Beer Festival in glorious weather at Leylands Park last Saturday.
The Hillians launched there very own Real Ale 'Leylands Best'
which went down very well with the regulars and will be a permanent
fixture at the club next season, as a second Real Ale pump will
be added to the bar as Ale has proved very popular this season.
Joint organiser for the event Dave Bradbury said "It was
a hugely successful day and everyone here enjoyed themselves.
There was a great selection of beers and I must thank Matt Wright
for organising that side of things. The main objectives for
the day was to promote the facilities at the Club and local
Real Ales which was both done successfully".
There were followers from other clubs there on the day with
a group of Kingstonian supporters met up with the Hillians Barmy
Army for the day as well as supporters from Leyton Orient who
are one of the only Clubs in the Football League to have a selection
of Ales on draught every matchday.
Bradbury further commented "This will be an annual event
at the Football Club and I'm looking to forward to organising
next seasons event with Matt".
The next Beer Festival Matt is running will be at the Martlets
in early October a follow up from his successful one there last
year.
Before the Brighton friendly, Noel Murphy, from the Burgess
Hill branch of FOCUS DIY & GARDENING presented a cheque
for £1,000 to Theresa de Berryman, the BHTFC Commercial
Manager and Ashley Carr the Youth Team co-Manager to help sponsor
Burgess Hill Town FC Youth Team.
It's
important to get at least a point on the 1st day of the new
season. Hillians equaliser very late in the game will leave
the home supporters and management feeling it was a fair result
a little more than the opposition will do. Strong winds in Hill's
favour in the first half, together with a slightly bumpy surface
made play difficult. Both sides showed enterprise, in a game
where both central defenders excelled, the half ended goaless.
Adam
Willis put the visitors ahead on 69 minutes, Joel Harding saved
the initial shot but was still grounded when his parry was put
straight back in. It wasn't until the 84th minute when, after
a corner, Will Berry for the Hillians was only about 2 feet
from the near post as he somehow managed to flick and turn in
a header from the narrowest of angles. Elated home fans then
watched in horror as Adam Willis went straight up the other
end and scored his second goal. The home side now pushed hard
and after a free kick was given on the edge of the box Matt
Percival thumped in the equaliser in the 92nd minute of the
93.

Hillians
sign Farnborough left-back on 1 month loan.
Sacha
Opinel, a very experienced and fiery left-back has come
on a 1 month loan to Burgess Hill from Blue Square South
side Farnborough Town.
Sacha
Opinel began his career in France before moving to Scotland
with Raith Rovers. Spells with Plymouth and Leyton Orient
followed before he joined Farnborough Town in 2003. He
moved to Crawley Town in 2005, and after a period with
Ebbsfleet United returned to Farnborough for a second
spell in 2009.
He
will make his debut tomorrow away at Horsham YMCA
A
big away win at Horsham YMCA who, at the moment, are a newish
side in the process of rebuilding after summer departures. Very
solid displays from new loanee Sacha Opinel and a first start
for Ronnie Green. The rest of the side was unchanged. Steve
Harper's free kick on 16 minutes beat everyone and the keeper
for the opening goal. The second came two minutes later from
the penalty spot after Ronnie Green had been tripped on the
edge of the area. Danny Curd got the third on 23 mins. So in
the space of 7 minutes BH were 3 up but the result won't recognise
the string of fine saves that Joel Harding made during the game.
Substitute
Lloyd Skinner later tapped in a 4th after being set up by Steve
Harper on 69 minutes, Horsham got some reward with a late consolation
through Tommy Brewer.

This
win at
Leatherhead brings another boost to club. With Leatherhead finishing
last season so strongly and being fancied to do well this season,
this was a good win.
A
high engery, high tempo performance which over-powered the opponents,
still had to withstand the first 20 odd minutes where we didn't
see too much of the ball. So this was a well earned and deserved
win. Lloyd Skinner finished a passing move to score the first
(25mins) and Matt Percival blasted the second from the edge
of the box (52mins). Both goals involved good buildup and both
involved Steve Harper, but this report really should mention
all the team as there were good performances in every position.
Welcome
back Neil Watts, who I didn't get a picture of - next time.

An
absorbing, quality encounter, saw the Hillians have the better
of the first half, going ahead early on through a Steve Harper
penalty after Ronnie Green had been brought down. Phil Turner
equalized 5 minutes later and the score was 1-1 at half time,
a half that Burgess Hill will consider they had the better off.
The
second half was the reverse with Bognor dominating and maintaining
long periods of pressure. Hillians held on and with 5 minutes
to go Matt Percival (picture above) lined up his free kick in
a central position before slamming the ball home, via a flick
off a Bognor defender. Very early days, but encouragingly (although
having played a game more), Burgess Hill sit on top of the table
tonight.
It
did seem that things could come unstuck today .... first the
wrong kit was brought, meaning that we he had to ask Dulwich
if we could borrow some. They kindly came up an unfamiliar (for
us) red which we played in. Then it was noticeable that the
warm-ups only comprised 12 players including the goalkeeper,
word came through that 5 players were still stuck in traffic,
our own journey had taken well over 2 hours. The missing players
arrived about 20 minutes after kick-off. This meant that of
the team on the pitch 3 players were making their first ever
'starts' (Titus Patterson, Darren Boswell) and one (Ollie Allman)
his first ever appearance.
If
there were any early nerves, they were soon settled, and hard
work all over the pitch saw the Hillians go in at half time
0-0. Gradually through the second half there were substitutions
to bring on Leo Day, Lloyd Skinner and Lloyd Cotton.
On
51 minutes Lloyd Cotton scored from close range to become the
6th different scorer for the club this season and on 80 minutes
Sacha Opinel became the 7th when he scored direct from a corner,
the cross being so tight that it squeezed in off the keeper
and the near post through the narrowest of gaps.
80
minutes brought a wonderful goal from Hamlet's Clunis, a mazy
run and tight angle finish brought applause from Hillians fans.
The expected late pressure came and the welcome final whistle
followed that. Every game comes with it's own drama and excitement
at the moment, we are still Top Of The League ..... see you
at the ground on Tuesday evening for the next installment.
Finally
Sacha tell 'new boy' Ollie to look over there
and not up the back of the stand!
Top
versus bottom often seems to unsettle the higher side
and energise the lower ....... and, so it was!
But
in the business of 'looking for the positives' whenever
possible : we got a draw and were still top of the table
- it could be worse!
It
was, from the Burgess Hill point of view, a poor game
where the home side just couldn't settle into the game.
Maybe more credit should be given to Casuals for disrupting
our play, they certainly didn't read the script.
0-1
down well inside the first minute! Danny Curd equalised
just before half time on his welcome return from injury,
the second half was played out much like the first, but
without the goals, with Joel Harding in the Hillians goal
regularly coming to their rescue.

Two
new signings today. After training recently with the Hillians
SAVERIO ARONA (Central Defender, 5'11" 68kg) and
GIUSEPPE SANSO (Midfielder, 6ft 2" 70kg) will both
sign forms after training tonight (at Leylands Park, 7pm).
Both
players, from the Italian club Rosarno Calcio, will immediately
be duel signed with Sussex County Division 1 side St.
Francis Rangers and will join their squad on Saturday
for the game against Sidley, subject to International
Clearance.
A
good Cup atmosphere saw a few well-known faces at Leylands
Park for this FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round game, Former
Hill favourite Mickey Farmer was there to watch his son
playing for Eastbourne Town, Mickey was with Geoff Pook
another highly regarded Sussex footballer. And, after
too long an absence .... Darren Newman, one of Burgess
Hill's most renowned players was there too ... pictures
below.
After a quality away win at Leatherhead in the last round,
Hillians were now up against local rivals, and after a
Danny Curd hat-trick (24, 30, 71 mins) this match was
seemingly made safe at 3-0.
Hillians had gained the upper hand in this match and were
playing good football, moving the ball quickly and playing
with confidence. But late in the game Eastbourne struck
twice in little more than a minute (Sam Crabb 83, Ashley
Robinson 84), this after Hill had enjoyed long periods
of quality probing and possession. Those quick Eastbourne
goals meant that there were anxious moments towards the
end of the game and so the tension and action lasted the
full 94 minutes.

Unable
to travel to this game (from Cornwall) I can do no better than
lift the following from the excellent Ramsgate
website ...
Ramsgate
came into the game on the back of two wins with clean sheets,
and despite the absence of captain Ben Laslett through personal
commitments, confidence was high. It was a bit of a shock therefore
when Burgess Hill took a 16th minute lead when a weak shot was
deflected past keeper Conor Quinn by Warren Schulz as
Danny Curd homed in, although it was Schulz who restored the
status quo 2 minutes later with a powerful volley from the edge
of the area gave Joel Harding no chance. The Rams nearly took
the lead in the 22nd minute when Mitchell Sherwoods cross
found Joe Taylor outside the area, who turned and curled it
towards the far top corner, but the ball flew just outside the
woodwork. Burgess Hill extended their lead 5 minutes before
the interval when a corner ball flew across the goalmouth, assisted
by a flick-on header and the keepers finger tips
and Lloyd Cotton headed in at the far post. The Rams nearly
equalised in the final moments of the half, when Sherwood put
the ball over to Schulz in the middle, but keeper Joel
Harding did well to block the shot with his legs and, although
the ball came back to Schulz he was bundled off the ball by
a defender.
Ramsgate
introduced midfielder Paul Axon for right back Ryan Harker at
the break, with a more attacking line-up, and 6 minutes in Mark
Lovell swung a ball in from the right to Schulz in the box,
but his close range shot went off the crossbar. Burgess Hill
extended their lead further in the 57th minute when a poor header
by Liam Quinn was intercepted by Curd, who broke to the right
before crossing to Steve Harper, who sidestepped a defender
before volleying past keeper Quinn. In the 62nd minute
Schulz hit the woodwork again, when he beat the defence to Sherwoods
looping cross from the right and headed clear of Harding, but
the ball hit the upright. Four minutes later and Darren Boswell
fancied getting the Hillians 4th, but his long range effort
flew well clear over the goal as well as the wall behind the
terrace, while with 4 minutes to go Harper had another good
effort, but keeper Quinn saved well. Then, in the 90th
minute, a ball from Lovell released Sherwood on another incisive
run, but as he cut inside the area and shot at goal a defenders
outstretched arm blocked the shot. Sherwood took the penalty
himself, but a great save by Harding kept the score at 1-3.
How
the Mid Sussex Times saw it ... BURGESS Hill manager Gary Croydon
admitted his side were taken to the cleaners as they
lost their first game of the season at Whitehawk on Tuesday night.
An
under strength visiting Hillians conceded inside the first minute
and were 3-0 down after 20 minutes before the hosts, one of the
favourites to win the league went on to record a 6-0 rout to subject
Croydons men to their first defeat this season.
Hill
were without Sacha Opinel, who has returned to Farnborough following
his loan spell and the injured Matt Percival. Croydon tried to change
things around, replacing Ollie Allman for Lloyd Skinner after only
20 minutes to support strikers Steve Harper and Danny Curd but it
could not prevent a heavy first loss.
Croydon
refused to blame selection problems for the defeat and said he believed
his side had been well beaten by the team who will be lifting the
Ryman South title come the end of the season. We
had injures and because we dont have much depth it was difficult
but really we got taken to the cleaners, he said.
I
think we have lost 6-0 to the team who will win this league. They
are a very good side and there wasnt a player playing for
them who won the County League last season. Its
difficult to take positives but the fact of the matter is this was
a first defeat, yes it was a heavy defeat, yes it was against our
local rivals but I think they are a train that once they get going
nobody is going to be able to stop and against us I think they left
the station.
Days
after an awful defeat at Whitehawk, the Hillians travel to the 100%
league leaders for an FA Cup tie, this time with even more players
unavailable the game is a close run thing, and Burgess Hill spend
the latter stages of the game seeking an equaliser and hopeful of
a replay. But after taking an early lead with a Steve Harper penalty,
Hillians are edged out by the odd goal.
This
game sees the debut of two Italian players, who have been training
with club for some weeks and keeping match fit with appearances
for St. Francis Rangers in Sussex County League 1, with who they
have been dual signed for that purpose.
After
some early chances for the Hillians, an early(ish) goal from Lloyd
Skinner settled the crowd and the team, who both enjoyed some good
football. The crowd knew a second goal would be important and so
did the team and we all knew that it would come! 1-0 at half time,
but after too long spent in their own half Hill conceded, but there
was still 25 minutes left to get the winner, we all knew it would
come!
It
often seems hard to beat a team that you have just recently beaten
(like Chipstead last season). A rest for the team this Saturday
who have had an intensive start to the season, a start that has
only brought one Cup and one League defeat.
Well
known faces at the game last night ....... great to see Nick Fogden
and Shaun Grice.

For
today's trip to Chipstead Hillians kept the same line-up that
started last Tuesday. Leaving the south coast in shirt sleeves
and bright sunshine - an hour up the road it's a cold misty
day worth an overcoat.
Hill
fashion a few chances in the first half, which finishes at 0-0,
most supporters probably don't see anything to suggest that
the visiting club will trail 2-0 after an hour of play.
Steve
Harper and Ronnie Green are brought on and Hill strive to get
back into the game. Ronnie Green scores with his head. After
the goal, no celebrations and back to work. Darren Boswell is

for the website ......
It
was a stunning performance, the type which we hope and should expect
to see more often in the future.
Full
credit should be given to those starting for the first time: Titus
Patterson, Darren Boswell and Ollie Lockyer all of whom played lots
of exciting football.
It
was a relentless showing of quality football.

Unable
to get to the game but following the match on www.coveritlive.com
on my mobile. I've had to lift the report from the Worthing
FC website (thanks very much) ..... Here's the report written
by Sam Skilton
The
Rebels were left red faced as local rivals Burgess Hill Town
netted six at the A2B Stadium to progress to the next round
of the Isthmian League Cup.
Chris
White was forced to make changes to the side that stole a late
equaliser at Corinthian Casuals on Saturday with influential
captain Tony Timms suspended. Ryan Peake replaced him at the
heart of defence and Tom Manton was named as captain for the
night, however there were just two other changes to the starting
eleven with Mike Huckett returning to the side and striker Ryan
McBride making his home debut. Despite
naming a strong side, Worthing were sluggish to start and capitulated
at the back; conceding four goals within the first 25 minutes.
It
took just seven minutes for the visitors to grab their first
of the night as Ollie Lockyer capitalised on Seb Bartons
mistake to tap in after the dual signed Eastbourne Borough goalkeeper
spilt a cross. It could easily have been 2-0 moments later,
but Steve Harpers lob dropped wide of the far post with
Barton beaten. It
was only a matter of time before the Hillians doubled their
advantage though, and the match was just 12 minutes old when
Harper fended off Zac Beda and tucked the second under Barton.
Harper then had another chance to score, but could only drag
wide from 20 yards.
On
20 minutes the Rebels gave themselves a lifeline with Mike Huckett
turning in John Lansdales free-kick from close range,
however it was Burgess Hill who were piling on the pressure
and Titus Patterson was denied on the goal line by Lansdale
as Worthing breathed a sigh of relief. Just
a minute later the visitors had added a third though. With the
Worthing defence struggling to cope with long balls over the
top, Patterson easily beat Lansdale and placed clinically into
the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area, and it
was less than a minute before Ollie Lockyer finished Pattersons
low cross to make it 4-1.
With
just a quarter of the match played the Rebels were three goals
down, and seemingly out, although it could have been worse with
Giuseppe Sansos 30 yard strike ruled out for a deflection
from his offside teammate. Will
Berry and Darren Boswell both also had chances for the Hillians
but were unable to take them, and Worthing should have clawed
back another on 36 minutes but Terry Dodd shot straight at the
advancing goalkeeper when clear through in the penalty area.
There
was only a minute left to play before the break when the visitors
scored their fifth following more sloppy Worthing defending.
Patterson was allowed space on the flank and provided a cross
to the far post where the unmarked Darren Boswell produced a
wonderful powered volley which cannoned down and, according
to the linesman, across the line. Terry
Dodd headed just over the bar from a Luke Gedling corner with
seconds of the first half remaining; however the game was almost
already beyond the Rebels reach.
Half-time:
Worthing 1-5 Burgess Hill Town
The
second half was far less eventful than the first, but just eight
minutes after the restart the away side had capped their win
with another goal as Steve Harper broke through and slotted
beyond Seb Barton to wrap the game up. With
half an hour remaining the Rebels made a triple substitution
with Tom Lawley, Shaun Charles and Mike James introduced to
the game, but excluding a Lawley shot which was saved by Burgess
Hill goalkeeper Joel Harding, the home side were unable to produce
an inspired comeback.
In
fact, it could have been worse had Harper not been denied a
hat-trick by the woodwork as his powerful strike from long range
struck the crossbar.
The
Rebels now have until Saturday to evaluate exactly where it
all went wrong on a very disappointing night at the A2B Stadium.
Obviously the absence of captain Tony Timms in the heart of
the defence had an impact on the sides overall performance;
however there was seemingly a lack of a cutting edge across
the park. To have any hope of overcoming Folkestone Invicta
in the FA Trophy this weekend Chris Whites side will have
to improve significantly.

Debut
goal for Ollie
Video
from the big win at Worthing ... showing Youth Team player Ollie
Lockyer, aged 16, scoring on his debut. The video shows him with
the 1st goal of the game .... he later scored the 4th goal too.
He's
in the orange boots, winning the ball in his own half, passsing
out wide right, before ......
A
wet night at Leylands Park welcomed visiting Godalming Town. The
'phone had been busy with enquiries as to whether the game would
go ahead, but the pitch was fine and stood up well. Godalming
certainly didn't look like a side that had shipped 6 goals only
a few days earlier, in fact on the early showing they looked a
very strong side able to move the ball quickly.
Midway
through the first half, after pressure at either end of
the pitch, Hillians has a very good opportunity to go
head and the cleared ball was collected by Lloyd Skinner
on the left side of the box ... he quickly and firmly
drilled home from a narrowish angle.
That
lead lasted about 2 minutes and the half ended level.
Godalming
continued to look strong, their side sprinkled with some
Woking Academy players. But, as the game went on Burgess
Hill started to 'play through' them more and more - each
occasion looking likely to bring a reward, and twice it
did ...... Lloyd Skinner (right) finishing both chances
to complete his Hat-trick.
A
rare straightforward game perhaps ... after only 4 minutes
when Nick Fogden headed Burgess Hill into an early lead ...
it seemed the Hillians and their supporters might enjoy an
uncomplicated match. However, 20 minutes later Nick Fogden
was in goal for the home side and facing a penalty for his
first touch! Keeper Joel Harding having been sent off for
seeming to pull down an opponent as he headed for goal. Nick
went the right way and got a touch, but not enough.
Two
minutes later with the side still adjusting to it's new setup,
Lloyd Skinner having to be sacrificed for defender Neil Watts,
Walton scored their 2nd goal. That remained the score until
the end of the half. I think most people would agree that
the game seemed far from over at that point, with the Hillians
still having a big portion of the play with only 10 men.
Burgess
Hill show great resolve, endeavour and lots of belief in the
second half, but eventually, on the hour, fell behind to a
3rd goal, pretty much against the run of play. On 63 minutes
Hill were awarded a penalty which Steve Harper scored and
when the ref (on his birthday!) levelled the numbers by dismissing
the W&H No.5 for a second yellow with 20 minutes still
left to play - BH replaced Arona with Ronnie Green and hunted
the equaliser.
The
home side probed and probed and after numerous corners ...
the whistle went. A spirited showing bringing no points. Manager
Andy Gander summed up the game "Two bad minutes cost
us the game. It's just a blip"
Walton
& Hersham: Roberto Gagliardi, Dean Thomas, Ashley Quashie, Daniel
Sintim (Avun Jephcott 28), Adam Howarth, Richard Taylor, Liam
Collins (Adam El-Haddad 85), Victor Kiri, Kenny Ojukwu, Nathan
Haisley (Bernard Asante 45), Phil Williams. Subs. not used:

Not
much in the first half between the two sides ..... except
for a Chatham goal, after about 30 minutes, that took so
many deflections in the box that there will probably be
10 home players still trying to claim it, it might even
have been an own goal.
But,
in the second half, there was only one team in it, with
the Hillians continually seaching for the equaliser (or
better), which nobody would deny would be the least that
their performance deserved.
It's apparent - especially after recent results - that football
is not always about what you deserve and can be more about
what you get. But what we will get from the second half
performance is a lot of confidence in our play for the matches
coming up next.
With
'keeper Joe Harding suspended for one match, the big news
of the day was always going to be the debut, in goal, of
Youth Teamer Tom Betts who only turned 17 last month. He
was properly tested by Chipstead and had the answers each
time, especially getting down so quickly to deflect the
ball away at his near post, the score then being 1-0, probably
a very important stop.
A
dramatic first few minutes to the game saw Chips No.9 Denver
McKenzie sent off for violent conduct after leaving Nick
Fogden on the ground for some time getting treatment to
his chest.
The
game remained goaless until almost the stroke of halftime,
when Lloyd Cotton forced his way past several defenders
to get to the goalline and then towards goal, firing at
the narrowest of gaps to shoot the ball high into the Chipstead
net.
In
the second half the crowd enjoyed Burgess Hill's passing
game, Hill gaining control of the game through Steve Harper's
assured finish on about 70 minutes. and a few minutes later
substitute Darren Boswell adding the 3rd for his second
goal of the week. Titus Patterson also had an impact on
the game when he joined from the bench in the later stages
. A solid home victory with lots of joined-up play.

The
second Walton goal came before half-time and was a bit of
a blow as it was really against the run of play, the Hillians
had gradually and patiently passed their way back into the
game. Having said that Burgess Hill will not feel that they
did enough to win this game, but were worth a goal from
the chances created in the second half, where Hill again
displayed entertaining passing football.

This
was a high quality performance, the score not really reflecting
the Hillian's dominance. The first half's passing game produced
a good number of chances for the visitors and the only worry
would have been that none of the chance had been converted.
Eventually
the goal came, when a corner was cleared, but only straight
up in the air, Danny Gainsford rose to feed the ball down
with a good glancing header to Danny Curd, who spun and hooked
it into the goal from about 2 yards. Further good play continued
but with only a slender lead the final 10 minutes brought
the expected pressure from Sittingbourne. A couple of good
saves from Joel Harding and stout defending saw the game out.
Late November and we sit 4th in the table.
Sportingly
some Sittingbourne officials said that BH were one of the
best sides they'd seen this season.
Bob
Hitchcock in the Hillians dugout confirmed : "Over 90
minutes that was our best performance this season"
A
draw could be seen as a good result by the home side, considering
the result in the reverse fixture. But with Hillians recent
results and good form, and, a 2-0 lead ..... well, in the
end it was still a good result, and certainly an exciting
and entertaining match.
The
two goal lead lasted until the 40th minute, another 5 minutes
might have done the trick. The first goal on 17 minutes came
from Matt Percival making his first League start for many
weeks after injury, he fired the ball home to finish off a
good passing move. The second goal came after 30minutes when
a long high ball found Steve Harper out wide on the right
touchline, he brought it down and in the same movement passed
it around his marker, running onto the ball and sending an
inch perfect pass into the path of Danny Curd to score and
finish a move of the highest standard.
Hill
couldn't hold the lead until halftime, on 40 minutes Joe Gatting
poked one home from close range after heavy pressure from
Whitehawk. After the break as expected, Whitehawk encouraged
by their goal continued tirelessly to seek the equaliser.
Saverio Arona now replaced Matt Percival, dropping in at right
back with Neil Watts moving to midfield. With about an hour
gone Whitehawk won a free kick on the edge of the Hill Box,
the kick was fired into the wall and a penalty given for handball.
Although Joel Harding in goal, went the right way the shot
was firmly hit and the score now 2 -2.
If
we had the better of the first half, it was now the turn of
the opposition. Right upto the final whistle - heavy Hawks
pressure. A couple of smart stops from the Hillian's keeper
towards the end of the game kept the scores level. Lloyd Skinner
replaced Danny Curd for the later stages. A quality entertaining
game, Hill maybe a little happier with the point than high-flying
Whitehawk.

Match Interview: Assistant Manager Andy Gander ---->
Both
sides hadn't had a game for a few weeks, but it was
the Hillians who showed it the most. This was a very
rusty showing in a game that many would see as difficult
considering the number of wins and goals that Burgess
Hill had scored over today's oppenents in recent seasons.
In
the 2nd minute a very good cross was met by an equally
good header to put Burgess Hill 1-0 behind, this set-back,
so early in the game, proved to be a killer blow. A
second goal on the hour, from ex-Hillians Luke Gedling
summed it all up.
It
would be easy to point out the absence, in central midfield,
of two influencial players - but there was strong cover
in those positions. The difference in this performance
and the team's most recent match against Whitehawk was
enormous. Publicly, The Hillians management will see
it as 'one of those days'.
What
should be remembered is that this was only the SECOND reversal
in the last TWELVE local derbies that Burgess Hill have played.

Plenty
of snow all over Britain has meant lots of postponed matches.
Bhtfc haven't played a game since 11th December. Here is some
club news via the Brighton Argus this time ...
Burgess
Hill have increased their firepower by signing Loxwood striker
Damon Aston. Aston has found the net 16 times this season
for the County League division two outfit and impressed
when he played against the Hillians in the Sussex Senior
Cup ten days ago.
The
21 year old is expected to go straight into the side for
the visit of Leatherhead on Monday (match since postponed).
Boss
Gary Croydon said:"We want to make a real push for
the play-offs and at this stage of the season you need players
who can score goals. We are already well served in that
respect with Danny Curd and Steve Harper but adding another
good young striker to the squad will give us another option."
Meanwhile,
Hillians are hopeful of getting the game on against Leatherhead
but are appealing for an army of helpers to clear the snow
at Leylands Park. Croydon said "There is snow on the
pitch but it is soft underneath and we're optimistic that
we will get the game on but we will need people to clear
it. We are keeping the snow on the pitch to keep it protected
and will only clear it at 9am on the 27th"
The
Hillians have a clean bill of health for the game against
the leaders and nobody is unavailable on hoilday.
Terrific
picture here CLICK
of Damon Aston on the Loxwood site.
This
site spoke to the Manager today, who confirmed the signing
of Damon Aston, adding that other players have been looked
at and that "another player is close to signing for us."
Recent
weeks has seen the departure of three Hillians: Ronnie Green,
Giuseppe Sanso and Saverio Arona. The Club and this site thanks
them for their great efforts and wishes them well. We look
forward to seeing you again sometime. The two Italian players
have returned home to sign Contracts with a Serie D club and
Ronnie has moved on.

whose loan spell here ended some time ago, this site
has never thanked him. If I'm right, we never lost a

No
report from this game, in fact only 46 supporters could get
there! In the Club's first game against Loxwood FC, who currently
play in the Sussex County League Division 2, goals from Steve
Harper, Danny Curd (2), Giussepe Sanso and Oliver Lockyer
saw Hill comfortably through to the next round for another
match-up against Eastbourne Town.
The
game was notable for the final appearances of our two Italian
players who are returning to Italy having been offered contracts
in Serie D.

New
Year started with a much needed game for the Hillians, in
front of Nyewood Lanes biggest crowd of the season so
far, 468, and on a good surface, this was a quality game ...
until the last 8 minutes. The final score being a little flattering
to home side. Although the BH management will be the first
to admit that today Bognor were the better team.
The
home side had raced into a two-goal first half lead (including
a penalty), Hillians badly needed a goal before half time,
which didn't come, but it did come early in the second half.
On 55 minutes Lloyd Cotton forced the ball home from close
range.
The
Hillians now had a period of sustained pressure, during which
the young Bognor keeper made the home fans sweat after rushing
off his line and out of his area to bring Steve Harper down.
After some delay he was shown a yellow card, it maybe could
have been different, it could maybe have changed the game
... maybe ... maybe.
Bognor
rode out the pressure and with time running out for Burgess
Hill, it was obvious that it was never their intention to
quietly see the game out. Numbers were moved forward into
attack searching for an equaliser .... that's when the two
late Bognor goals came to put the game beyond doubt.

I
nearly didn't travel today (bad back) but seeing who
would be in goal for Bognor - on loan from the Brighton
Academy, to replace the suspended Craig Stoner - I went
to see Josh Jones who was part of Coombe Rovers 6 year
olds, about 12 years ago. That group split into 2 groups
6yo and 7yo, the second group got so large it split
again later.
3 keepers emerged: this one, one made a Ryman bench
last year and one appearing at County level ... not
bad!

Burgess
Hill won through to the Quarter Finals of the Sussex Senior
Cup tonight with a straightforward win over Eastbourne Town.
Aware of our three games with Eastbourne this year which have
ranged from a solid victory, through 3 goal leads and hanging
on at the end, to a draw, Hill would be concerned to ensure
no slip-ups. But strangely tonight's game lacked the fire
of the recent encounters. Hill were relieved to get through
this game courtesy of goals from Danny Curd and Steve Harper.
No
new 'knocks' tonight. We can go into the weekend game with
almost a completely fit squad. Only doubt being Matt Percival
who is still feeling his hamstring after the Bognor game.
Here's
a match report b Chris Francis of The Mid Sussex Times ... IT
WAS third time lucky for Hillians in league derby matches although
poor finishing meant they had to wait until the second half to finally
put the bottom club in their place.
After
previous defeats at Worthing and Bognor, Hillians went into Saturdays
game on the back of a midweek cup derby success at Eastbourne but
desperately needing a league win to put their play-off push back on
track.
From
the opening whistle it looked only a matter of time before the floodgates
opened but they had to wait until the 54th minute to turn their obvious
superiority into a lead and from there it was plain sailing.
Poor
YM have got through 70 players this season but new manager John Cumberbatch
opened with a home draw with Worthing five days earlier and probably
fostered hopes of taking something from this match. But it was surely
never a possibility despite Hillians leaving their shooting boots
at home in the first half.
There
was even the rare sight of Steve Harper missing a penalty, blazing
high and wide after 21 minutes, and he must have been a relieved man
when finally opening the scoring as gifted 16 year-old Ollie Lockyer
swung over a good cross that was headed on by Danny Gainsford for
the talismanic striker to nip in ahead of keeper Mark Fox, sporting
a sticking plaster on the nose after his injury caused a lengthy stoppage
in the first half.
It
was 2-0 on 64 minutes when Lockyer this time delivered an inswinging
corner that Gainsford headed in and a minute after that Lloyd Cotton
snaked his way along the line and scored from an outrageous angle.
That
enabled home boss Gary Croydon to ring the changes and one of the
subs, Titus Patterson, put Harper and Danny Curd through in quick
succession before the twin strike force made amends almost immediately
by fashioning the fourth goal on 73 minutes. Former Hassocks defender
Sol Bowra, who conceded the first-half penalty for a foul on Curd,
was mugged on the halfway line and Harper sent in Curd for a clinical
finish.
That
at least helped give the scoreline a more realistic look although
really Hillians could have had double figures as they tore the visitors
to shreds.
Young
Lockyer was superb in midfield and is surely destined for a bright
future in the game but while his team-mates enjoyed the relative freedom
of the park, their finishing caused frustration both on an off the
pitch.
But
it hardly mattered in the end and the catalogue of misses will be
forgotten quickly although that perhaps may not have been the case
had Gavin Gordon not put the home misses to shame with an awful finish
when put clean through five minutes before half time.
Yet
home goals seemed inevitable at some stage and top class approach
play left manager Gary Croydon believing his side now have the quality
to secure a top five finish with a shade more consistency in the new
year.
From
today's Argus ... news of two signings and I hear there may
be another one quite soon too.
Manager
Gary Croydon was bouyant ahead of tomorrow's game - pleased
with the new players and again especially pleased after last
night produced "another terrifc training session."
Last
night Burgess Hill Youth beat Horsham YMCA Youth 3 - 0, see
Youth Pages for report.
A
15 year old player called Alex Strange was in the squad 'just
to sit on the bench, probably' for the experience! But 10 minutes
from time, Manager Ashley Carr decided to 'give the boy a run'.
He went on and scored two good goals!
Alex
is the son of well-known ex-Hillian striker Richard Strange,
who in turn is the son of ex-Hillian and Club Historian: Peter
Strange.
No
point in trying to hide it ... this was not my sort of
day ... spending too long in the car on the way and arriving
about 5 minutes late. I move through the turnstile to
hear the tannoy announcer celebrating the first Walton
goal. I get comfortable(ish) and get the camera out ....
in time to take this picture of the second Walton goal
... 11 minutes of my life gone ... just like that, and
80 odd more to go!
We
knew Walton would be a tough game, having played them
on the first day of the season, and their League position
reflects that. It stays 2-0 until the 89th minute, with
Burgess Hill still trying to get something out of the
game, the numbers committed forward lead to the third
strike.
On
a happier note Sam Tucknott makes a bright debut from
the bench. After the game Gary Croydon relects that having
warned his team about the quick start he expected from
the Casuals, we still suffer a poor first 20 minutes of
the game. GC adds that, 'we played well after that and
were the better side in the second half'.
Hard
fought narrow away wins can be the most entertaining or nerve
wracking games ... depending on whether you are a neutral or
a supporter. The chances at either end were numerous, you couldn't
really use words like squandered or missed too often because
both keepers - our own Joel Harding and the well-known Ian Chatfield
in the Merstham goal - both had excellent games ... and they
were busy.
After
last week's sleepy start, the good early chances that
Merstham created were a worry, and really Hill didn't
have their share of the play in the first 10-15 minutes.
That's partly why this victory was so satisfying as the
Hillians gradually took over the balance of play.
The
side was adjusted slightly from last week with Nick Fogden
feeling unwell before the game (eye infection), Neil Watts
moved to center mid to partner Danny Gainsford and Titus
Patterson started. With so many chances not taken in the
first half, which way would the thoughts of the supporter
be turning - I would like to have bugged the dressing
room!
But
the chances continued to be created regularly after break
and as Manager Gary Croydon said after the game "As
long as chances are being created, there should be nothing
too much to worry about."
After
an hour of play a lofted ball fell between the collision
bound Lloyd Cotton and the Merstham 'keeper, Cotton reached
it just in time and lifted the ball over the goalie and
into the net, under the bar. (pictured below)

Sam
Tucknott played about the last 15 minutes and his quick and
energetic performance should give home fans something to look
forward to seeing when he makes his debut at Leylands Park.
Other new signing, the youngster Tom Bold sat on the bench for
this game, along with Youth player Tom Stilwell. Darren Boswell
replaced Danny Curd towards the end of the game.
Chances
continued to flow, and as Merstham put more and more players
forward the temptation to be found sitting too deep was countered
by the Hill bench vigorously pulling and encouraging the team
through the last period of a game that was a good spectacle
on what looked a difficult, heavy and tiring surface.

That's
6 points in 4 days away from home - and a play off spot ... in January
...
Hill
win the toss and make Fleet swop ends thus giving away the severe
slope advantage.
After
Saturday's satisfying away win, the Hillians were confident
tonight and moved the ball forward quickly right from the start.
The match is combatative and Fleet, who are not getting good
results lately are determined to turn things around tonight,
and are easily good enough to do that .... but it wasn't going
to be tonight against a well organised and energetic Burgess
Hill. Above all other things - as Manager GC points out "we
ALL worked very hard for EACH OTHER"
On
36 minutes Lloyd Cotton lifts the ball over the keeper in a
similar goal to last Saturday's.
Burgess
Hill's second half performance was one of dominance with the
chances starting to flow regularly. Danny Curd beat the keeper
but saw his shot come straight back off the far post and into
the keeper's arms. A little later he took the ball around the
keeper and slotted home at the other far post ... offside! Just
a little later in taking it around the keeper again ... he is
brought down ... penalty (64mins).
At
0-2 Hill are almost comfy and can be satisfied (again) having
subdued the Fleet side and gained a very good 3 points.

Burges
Hill striker Danny Curd is unavailable tomorrow as he is on
holiday but boss Gary Croydon says he was due a well-deserved
rest.
Curd
helped Hillians to a 2-0 win at Fleet on Tuesday which took
them into the final playoff spot and Croydon said: "Danny
has led the line brilliantly for us this season and he was black
and blue when he came off on Tuesday. He kept taking punishment
and to be honest I may have told him to take a breather this
weekeend."
Hillians
entertain Whyteleafe tomorrow in bouyant mood after back to
back away wins built on tight defensive displays.
Darren
Boswell,Titus Paterson and Sam Tucknott are all possible replacements
for Curd while Youth-teamers Kit Treager, Tom Stillwell and
Ollie Lockyer come into the squad.
Croydon
added: "I've had 400 games as manager for Burgess Hill
and I can't remember many team performances as good as Tuesday
night's. They all workded for one another which is what you
want to see as a manager."
Croydon
is also hopeful of persuading Sacha Opinel back to the club
for the latter stages of the season following a successful loan
spell last year.
Former
Charlton youngster Callum Christie, who left the club in the
summer to play in America, has also re-signed as cover for goalkeeper
Joel Harding.
After
two away wins during the last week, the Hillians returned home
to play Whyteleaf who traditionally are always a hard game for
the hosts and although they are currently at the wrong end of
the table and Hill are looking to firm up their play-off place
... well ... it can be a funny old game and in truth both sides
had good chances in the early stages.
It
took until mid-way through the first half for the home
side to calm the game down and by half time were 2 goals
infront. The first a header from Danny Gainsford ...
The
second goal was calmly slotted away by Steve Harper after
a Will Berry run that took him about 2/3 of the length
of the pitch before he played in the Hillian's top scorer.

Thanks
a lot to The MID SUSSEX
TIMES and their photographer Steve Robards for the use of these
pictures, from the last home game against Whyteleafe FC.
Tonight's
home Ryman League game against Leatherhead FC was abandoned
after 73 minutes by the referee. The evening had started quite
foggy and conditions got very difficult in the second half.
Leatherhead were leading 0-1 at the time, with a 4th minute
goal, a good strike that took a deflection to leave the keeper
wrong footed. Without three regular starters tonight, Hill were
starting to exert real pressure at the time of the abandonment,
but it will obviously leave the visitors the most disappointed.
Points
shared today with a side, under new management, who always prove
tough opposition for the Hillians. But after
only 11 minutes a run from Will Berry put the visitor's defence
under pressure resulting in the Whitstable left back Ashley
Ulph inadvertently lifting the ball over his own keeper, Shaun
Smith.
That
early goal could have been the springboard for another victory,
and although Hill played very well in the first half creating
chances, it was Whitstable who equalised 12 minutes after
the Hillian's goal with a well worked goal.
A
ball down the line just cleared the home defence and Scott
Heard squared the ball back for Pulman to give Joel Harding
no chance.
In
the second half both sides created half chances, and Hillians
had the wind at their backs but couldn't find the winner.
A high wind and difficult wet conditions still produced an
engaging match and with defeats for Walton Casuals and Sittingbourne
today a draw still keeps us firmly on course for that play-off
spot.
It's
easy to concentrate the attention 'at the other end' but it
shouldn't be forgotton that keeper Joel Harding made some smart
saves, especially with the last kick of the game ... which could
really have spoiled the day!

A
change to the last game's lineup after Nick Fogden (sick twice
on the way to the game) is on the bench, Neil Watts (not feeling
great either) switches to centreback and Sam Tucknott starts
the game.
On
a very bumpy and difficult pitch Hill gained another point 'on
the road' today. With the hard times Godalming have experienced
lately: the exit of most of their players to follow the departing
manager to a rival club and the ensuing poor results, it would
be easy to expect a smoother ride from this game.
But
anyone who looks at the league results every week will see that
pretty much nobody is having things all their own way this season,
and in the end Manager Gary Croydon expressed himself pleased
to get a point in a fixture that he always saw as being difficult.
The
game began with drama - after only a few minutes the host keeper
brought down Danny Curd who was clear through on goal, the keeper
injured himself in the process and after 7 minutes and on a
stretcher he was taken to hospital with a suspected broken jaw.
Steve
Harper scored the penalty and the referee who had been waiting
to one side while the unfortunate keeper was shifted to a stretcher,
kept the red card, he had to give, behind his back. Although
the keeper had to go, at least the official spared him the indignity
of having a Red waved at him as he left the pitch on his back!
Struggling
side ... 0-1 down ... down to 10 men ... outfield player in
goal ... 80+ minutes to go ... against play-off hopefuls !!!
it's obvious isn't it ...... Godalming go up the other end minutes

The
hosts get down to work, appealing everything, working hard,
the pitch remains a constant - constantly difficult, and the
visiting Hillians can't get the goal they want.
Burgess
Hill's manager had 'strong words' at half time, starting before
the team entered the dressing room, but the second half goes
goalless for Hill. A late reversal of pressure from Godalming
brings smart saves from Joel Harding in the Hill goal and in
the closing moments of the game a penalty is awarded to Godalming
for handball from a corner! The home side appeal with even more
vigour than in the rest of the game! But the handball has to
be by a defender, not the attacking side, as most people and
the linesman saw, so the referee is buzzed by his Assistant
and the decision is corrected.
Now
is the time to make your voice heard about the future of our
Football Club.
You
will have seen that Burgess Hill Town Council are promoting
for public consultation a town wide strategy for the growth
and development of Burgess Hill which is intended to form the
basis for the enlargement and development of the town over the
next twenty years. The proposals are on display for public consultation
at The Martlets Centre and The Triangle Leisure Centre and the
Council is inviting your views.
A
copy of the draft land use plan prepared by the Council
is available
I
would like to seek your support in bringing the re-location
of our Club to the forefront of the Council's thinking.
I
have been having discussions with Mid Sussex District Council
and Burgess Hill Town Council over the proposed re-location
of our ground and the provision of a new stadium for the past
six years. We initially made representations to Mid Sussex District
Council when they were reviewing the Core Strategy of their
Local Development Framework, but with changes in Government
and Planning Policy all the work that went into that has effectively
been kicked into touch. Under the provisions of the proposed
new localism agenda being brought in by the Coalition Government
power has now been passed down to the community through its
elected representatives to make local decisions on matters which
affect them. I believe our Football Club is one such issue.
Unfortunately, the plan proposed by Burgess Hill Town Council
goes nowhere near providing a solution to this.
The
present location of the Club at Leylands Park is far from ideal.
We recognize that our activities cause nuisance and disruption
to local residents by reason of the floodlights, the noise and
the car parking. Equally, the limited amount of space we have
prevents us from expanding the facilities to provide a better
environment for both players and spectators. In addition we
have no available training facilities. Our ambition to move
our Club up the non-league football pyramid is handicapped by
the limitation placed on us by the ground.
Sometime
ago we identified a site at Goddards Green which can be made
available to us to re-locate our Club to a new stadium and with
our own training facilities. Although the site is currently
on the western perimeters of Burgess Hill, it has always been
the case that Burgess Hill will expand westwards and we anticipate
that within five to ten years the new ground, although on the
edge of the Town, would be clearly associated with it. That
is still our preferred route because that site is available
and in our view, the use of that land for a leisure related
facility is more appropriate to its semi-rural location than
the proposed designation as a business park, which is what is
now shown on the Burgess Hill Town Council Plan.
The
Town Council Plan proposes a community sports centre at the
roundabout adjoining The Triangle Leisure Centre and St. Paul's
School. We support the idea of community facilities, but have
no wish to be involved in sharing facilities with the athletics
club, the rugby club and the numerous junior sports clubs in
the area. Burgess Hill Town Football Club is essentially a professional
club whose ethos and development ambition is to provide a centre
of excellence in football to give local youngsters with footballing
talent the opportunity to progress their careers. There are
many other clubs around who offer facilities for playing the
game at lower levels of ability.
Moreover,
the Town Council's proposals make no reference to the on-going
cost of maintaining a major community sports facility, save
to say that the funding will come from the intended residential
development on the northern side of the Town. This is very ambitious
in the current economic climate and what is more, imposing the
costs burden on to residential development developers will increase
the pressure for more houses, but also ensure that house prices
continue to rise at a time when it is evident that they are
already too expensive. The inevitable consequence of this is
that a community sports facility is unlikely to be deliverable
on any basis for many years to come.
We
do not want to wait many years and I would like you to make
your views known to the Town Council through the consultation
process going on at the moment. The points which the Football
Club will be making to the Town Council will be these:-
1.
The Football Club should not be seen as part of a community
sports centre with facilities shared with other clubs and other
sports. We are happy for the Council to provide whatever facilities
they think are appropriate for community use, but we require
a stadium and training facilities specifically for our own development
and that point has been made known to the Town Council many
times.
2.
The need for the Football Club to move is pressing. A move would
be beneficial not only to the Football Club, but also to the
local residents who currently have to suffer the disruption
that arises through the legitimate use by the Football Club
of the Leylands Park pitch.
3.
The site at Goddards Green is an appropriate use for a leisure
facility and is well-placed for transport connections so as
to avoid the potential disruption caused by a larger number
of visitors coming to the ground as the Club progresses up the
football pyramid.
4.
The site at Goddards Green is more appropriate for leisure use
than, as currently proposed, a business park, and would cause
virtually no disturbance to local residents.
5.
It is essential for the regeneration of Burgess Hill get the
ball rolling. There has already been much delay through changes
in policy and prolonged debate, with no end product. The re-location
of the Football Club will free up a key part of the development
land to enable housing development to take place and begin the
process of expanding the Town and providing the facilities the
Town Council express a desire to provide.
I
hope you will be able to support us in this campaign.
The
third draw in a row brought disappointment to a crowd who were
happy to see some football after the midweek postponement and
rain early in the day had threatened this game. An early pitch
inspection was passed and the pitch stood up very well, in fact
producing a very decent match.
The
story of the game is becoming a familiar one ... take the lead
and look good for a 'result', only to be derailled by an equaliser.
Manager Gary Croydon put it this way "First half our game
plan was good, we played well and kept on our game, second half
when we met with the pressure that every team will exert on
you at some stage of the game, we lost our stride and, as has
happened recently, just couldn't get going again. I know we
are always looking at players, but the quality in this squad
is good and certainly good enough to be turning some of these
draws into wins. I'm very happy with the squad and it's my job
get them back on track. Maybe Tuesday's Senior Cup game will
be a good opportunity to get back to winning games."
In
fact, the ambition at the start of the season was to aim for
5th place (our previous best finish is 7th last season) and
we sit firmly in that last playoff place of 5th right now.
Hillians'
goal scored after a surging run down the right by Lloyd Cotton
finishes with a pass into the path of Will Berry who sweeps
the ball home.
The
game was notable for the Hillians debut of Tom Parkinson, on
loan from Maidstone and also for the meeting on opposite sides
of twin brothers Joel and Pat Harding.

A
goal from Tom Parkinson in the second minute, in his second
game since joining on loan from Maidstone United, gave Hill
a great start. A ball which was headed in and out of the goalmouth
a number of times eventually come down at the feet of the
defender for the goal.
After
that, the tempo of the game rarely dropped and although the
home side finished the half with the narrow lead, the visitors
probably spent more time in their opponents half of the pitch.
The
tempo remained high in the second half and the Hillians enjoyed
much more of the game as the 'end to end' intensity continued
against one of the League's newcomers who have had big wins
this year over serious title contenders.
Faversham
equaliser with about 15 minutes to go during a goalmouth melee,
and although Hill had good chances to win the game after that
- this is a decent point against a form side.
Manager
Gary Croydon: "We probably did just enough to win the
game, but 2 years ago we would have lost this game and others
like it". This game sees the run of draws extended to
4, but from a much more positive angle - we are now unbeated
in 8 games.

Further
to my last statement I have had a meeting with David Carden
at Burgess Hill Town Council to discuss the needs and aspirations
of the Football Club in the context of the Burgess Hill Visioning
Plan.
I
am pleased to say that although at the moment this is still
a consultation document and no commitment is being made in
any direction, the Town Council do seem prepared to accept
that the Football Club requirements are separate from those
of the other sporting organizations and there is really no
prospect of the Club being required to share facilities with
the Rugby Club or the Athletics Club, or indeed anyone else.
We
have been invited to submit further details of our proposals
for a new facility for the Football Club and I shall shortly
be meeting with architects to prepare some preliminary plans.
Our preferred location is at Goddards Green, where we already
have an agreement in principle with the landowner. These plans
will be very much for consultation purposes and the input
from supporters will be invited before I put them back to
the Council.
The
consultation period on the Town Council's Visioning Plan for
Burgess Hill remains open until the 31st March.
In
order to help make our plans a reality, it would be helpful
if supporters could confirm to the Town Council (either using
the on-line Consultation Document on www.burgesshill.gov.uk/strategicvision
or picking up the forms at the Town Council Help Point in
Church Road) that subject to provision being made for the
allocation of land along the A2300 for the purposes of our
new ground, the remainder of the Visioning Plan has everyone's
support.

Hill Town FC Veterans played their first ever match at the
pristine surroundings at Nyetimber Lane, home of Bognor Regis
Town F C, playing against a star studded Bognor Regis Veterans
side in the Quarter Final of the Veterans Ryman League Cup.
Manager Ashley Carrs side more than matched the Bognor
team in the first half with Ryan Gaylers close range
header cannoning back off the cross bar. Speedy winger Tim
Marshall proved to be a thorn in the side of the Bognor defence
and his hard work was unrewarded as chances went begging.
Bognors high level of possession much to the style of
their former manager Jack Pearce proved the undoing of the
Burgess Hill team with Dean Wilkins pulling the strings for
Bognor, Burgess Hill gradually ran out of steam in the second
half. A speculative volley from Paul Thomas gave Bognor a
1-0 half time lead. And 2 dubious late penalty decisions sealed
the match for Bognor, Thomas scoring both penalties. Man of
the Match for Burgess Hill was the evergreen Paul Williams.

A
very disappointing loss in a fixture that the management were
hopeful of getting a good result in.
Even
at a goal behind, Manager Gary Croydon considered that Burgess
Hill were the better side and having seen good chances created,
was seeking at least an equaliser.
But the loss of central defender Nick Fogden after about an
hour of play made the task much more difficult. A poor challenge
by Fogden had both players sliding on the astro-turf surrounds
and nearly ending up in the dugout. The ensueing commotion
ensured a red card was brought out. An official of the home
club later apologised for the behaviour.
Even
with 10 players Hill adopted a 3-3-3 setup and chased the
game, but two goals by the Police in 2 minutes sealed the
visitors fate.
On
a brighter note ... Sonny Cobbs made his Burgess Hill
debut today, on loan from Lewes until the end of the
season.
Burgess Hill Ladies webpage has been updated with 3 new match
reports, including a very good away win that will take them
to the Ryman Ladies Cup Semi Final. Last season the Ladies team
reached the final of the Sussex competition...........
A
tough game against the side in 6th, one place beneath Hill
who still occupy that last play-off place.
Walton were fresh from scoring 6 at Worthing a few days
ago in their last game, but this was a quite tight first
half. Although there were chances Hillians defence held
firm and with players missing tonight still enjoyed a very
decent share of the play. About 10 minutes into the second
half Walton took the lead with a super strike by Chris Wales
from 25 yards, Hill were on the back foot and sat deep for
just enough time for the goal. The struggle continued and
with a little over 10 minutes remaining Darren Boswell was
put through, he out-paced his marker and shot very firmly
across the keeper in the far bottom corner from the edge
of the box. Shortly after that Boswell pulled up and left
the field for treatment on a stretcher.
A
tense finish and a good point earned. Manager Gary Croydon
says that today his players showed great spirit and application
to get a point at Walton & Hersham and remain in the
play off place with so many players injured.

COBRA
DENNIS PROBEE YOUTH CUP (UNDER 18 COUNTY CUP) .
PLAYED AT LANCING COUNTY GROUND.
Burgess
Hill Town's Youth team lifted the u 18 County cup Trophy
at Lancing beating a very hard working Broadbridge Heath
side by a single goal. A crowd of nearly 400 watched a tense
and somewhat frustrating encounter.
The
first half had little in the way of goal mouth action and
rarely were the keepers called into action. The crowd had
to wait 30 minutes for the first real chance of the match.
The Hillians nearly took the lead when Cook flicked the
ball backwards with his head. Hill striker Josh Fawssett
controlled the ball and unleashed a fierce shot that had
the Heath keeper beaten but the ball cannoned off the underside
of the bar and away to safety.
Soon
after Broadbridge Heath had an opportunity to take the advantage.
Heath's striker outpaced the Hill defence and was one on
one with Betts in the Burgess Hill goal, but the keeper
closed down the attacker and made a superb save with his
legs to send the teams in at the interval goalless.
The
second half was much the same as the first and the feeling
amongst most was that the game would be won by the odd goal
or would go into extra time. The game was 69 minutes old
when Burgess Hill scored what proved to be the winning goal.
Hill's
Kit Tregear took up the ball just outside the box. His injection
of pace caught out the Broadbridge defence his fierce shot
was parried by the keeper and Jacob Cook was on hand to
score his 9th goal of the Cup campaign.
The
remainder of the match was very tense. Broadbridge Heath
gave everything to try and find away of getting back into
the game but the the Hill stood firm and held out to lift
the trophy. Captain Tom stillwell lifted the trophy infront
of the crowd to rapturous applause. He and his teammates
enjoyed a memorable victory.
Hills
youth team can now turn their attentions back to the league.
Lying second in the Ryman Youth League and a League Cup
quarter final against Staines Town fast approaching there
will be no time for the boys to rest ahead of what will
be a hectic run in.

points away from home and still in the play-off position.
Another
inevitable end of season type pitch, which the Hillians managed to
produce a more than decent showing on. Danny Curd rifled the first
on 12 minutes from the edge of the box, Sonny Cobbs (averaging a goal
game and safely harnessed at left back!) bobbled the second in before
half time. Lloyd Cotton firmly headed a third early in the second
half and Hill then held a dominant three goal advantage which reflected
the run of play. With the clock running down, two lapses brought a
worrying last five, but the visitors took home a great three points,
and, other results now leave a play-off place a distinct possibility.
It really is getting exciting as Hill approach an end of seson run-in

Considering
the other entertainments on offer tonight - Crawley at home
are sold out with them due to receive their League honours,
Brighton at home, sold out and about to confirm their promotion
to The Championship and then there's Manchester United playing
Chelsea in the European Cup on tv - a bumper crowd of 303
were well entertained at Leylands Park, let's hope that we
might have gained some much needed new supporters.
After Saturday's disappointing game this was anything other
than dull. After a fast and bustling game Hill were beaten 0-2,
but it was goaless until early in the second half and on chances
... well it could be argued that the home side had more. A late
super save and the crossbar kept Hill at bay and them a late
2nd from Leatherhead flattered the score a bit and most might
agree that a draw would have been a reasonable reflection of
the play. Burgess Hill were without a few players tonight but
must now be considered in good form for the important game a
Corinthian-Casuals this Saturday.
Here's
how
Chris Francis of the Mid Sussex Times reported the game
...
HILLIANS
were without six frontline players as they slipped to a
second successive home defeat on Tuesday but manager Gary
Croydon remains bullish about his sides play-off chances.
Tuesdays 2-0 loss to play-off certainties Leatherhead
was disappointing, especially as the players responded so
well after Saturdays hugely disappointing defeat to
Merstham, but they are still one point clear of play-off
rivals Walton & Hersham, who visit leaders Bognor on
Saturday when Hillians travel to lowly Corinthian Casuals.
Certainly only victory will do for Croydons hopefuls
and while there are few easy games in Ryman 1, a similar
display to Tuesdays should be enough to put them back
on track.
Leatherhead looked all over the winners at 1-0 up when the
original match was abandoned after 73 minutes but on Tuesday
they had to play second fiddle to their hosts after breaking
the deadlock four minutes into the second half.
Tommy Hutchins was the scorer with a crisp shot that gave
Tom Betts no chance as it cannoned in off the inside of
his lefthand post.
Hillians could easily have caved in from there but they
managed to have the better of the half and went close to
equalising before the divisions leading scorer came
off the bench to score No 2 in stoppage time when the hosts
were pushing men forward.
Sonny Cobbs pulled a useful save from Chico Ramo and then
Matt Percival cracked a half volley against the underside
of the bar. Those efforts came late on and before that Tanners
skipper Chris Boulter cleared off the line when John Boswell
got in a tangle with his keeper and the ball went goalwards
off the body of the No 5.
Chances
were at a premium throughout the match, with the first half,
in particular, played at a frenetic pace. But only five
minutes in Danny Curd missed a good chance created by the
lively Sam Tucknott.
Leatherhead always looked lively but young Betts was equal
to anything they could throw at him and after 33 minutes
Titus Patterson had another decent chance for Hillians.
They
could count themselves particularly unfortunate to concede
the second goal after Betts did superbly to foil Greg Andrews,
who then made no mistake with his follow-up effort.
That means their rivals now have a slightly superior
goal difference and as things tighten up, it could
prove crucial.
Leo Day has finished his three-match ban but messrs
Harper, Parkinson, Berry and Harding are all doubtful
or definitely out with injuries, so it seems the experienced
Sacha Opinel is the most likely to return.

A
bad week for the Hillians ... but the side still hold onto that
5th and last play-off place and that following a week with three
defeats on the trot. It was a
very poor showing today, probably only 1 or 2 players having
a decent game. "We were not good enough, and that includes
me" said the Hillians Manager.
It's
crazy, with three games to go, we still sit above our highest
ever finish (7th last season) having just lost three games in
a week. With back-to-back Saturday home game coming up it's time
for the players and supporters to pull together and get back on
track.
This
is how Chris Francis of the Mid Sussex Times reports on the game:-
AN absolutely woeful performance at Tolworth on Saturday sent Hillians
to a third successive defeat and they can count themselves mighty
fortunate to hold on to the fifth and final play-off place for a 13th
week by dint of their major rivals losing on their much tougher trip
to leaders Bognor.
Even the scoreline was the same to leave Walton & Hershams
goal difference advantage still at only two and suggest that the force
could be with Hillians despite this wretched display and dire result.
Injuries and unavailability have certainly hit them hard in the last
few weeks and the signs were not good when striker Steve Harper failed
a fitness test. That meant the starting line-up was still short of
five frontline players although it should still have been good enough
to see off a Casuals side starting the match third from bottom.
It would be nice to think it was being watched by their president
Jimmy Hill, who travelled up from Hurstpierpoint for the match, that
lifted the hosts but certainly Hillians dreadfully insipid performance
was a major factor as four second-half goals carried Casuals to their
biggest league win of the season. READ THE REST IN THURSDAY'S PAPER.
Sharing
the points with with play-off rivals Dulwich Hamlet was probably
a fair result, a good point and one that still leaves us placed
for a chance at that last play-off place. The long spell of
very hot dry weather had taken its toll on the pitch but both
sides worked hard to produce an absorbing match.
Mid-way
through the first half Matt Percival hit a free kick from
about 35 yards to score a goal worthy of winning the game
for Hill. A similar period into the second half and Dulwich
scored their equaliser. Both keepers produced displays that
kept their sides in contention.
It's
odd how the fixtures work out, but after the coming Bank Holiday
Monday games, all four sides looking for that 5th place finish
will be involved in games next Saturday, the last day of the

A
place in the Play-offs is still possible, but Hill's destiny is now
in the hands of other teams.
After
this defeat, a place in the play-offs is now out of
our hands: we would need to win our last game (Saturday
at home to Ramsgate) and Walton & Hersham would
have to draw with Dulwich Hamlet.
This
time other results didn't go our way and not enough
positive results in recent games could have cost the
Hillians that last play-off place ... but it's not over
quite yet.
On
a good pitch, it was a good performance and after conceding
midway through the first half, Hill pushed hard for an equaliser
and enjoyed plenty of the play. Burgess Hill probably had the
better of the second half and by the end Leatherhead had withdrawn
their two top scorers to secure the win they need to hold their
home advantage spot in the play-offs.
With
Steve Harper, Tom Parkinson, Will Berry and Sam Tucknott missing
through injury before this match, the injury list now has
another name on it ... Nick Fogden who looked like he pulled
a hamstring today. Hopefully Leo Day will be ok after a head
injury early in today's game. It might be a shame to finish
the season with a depleted squad, but it'll be hard to complain
about a season that will probably (for the 2nd season running)
bring our highest ever Isthmian League finish. Remember there
are plenty of cup winning, league leading, Youth players waiting
for their chance.

HERE'S
HOW THE MID SUSSEX TIMES' Chris Francis reported the match
... A SPIRITED 1-0 defeat at Leatherhead on Monday
means Burgess Hill have taken only one point from 15 but despite
losing the final play-off place they had occupied for three
months, they still go into the final game with a chance of
regaining that spot.
Anything
at Fetcham Grove would have been a bonus, with the visitors
having to turn out some walking wounded, notably centre half
Danny Gainsford and centre forward Danny Curd. They
were also without several key players but gave a gutsy show
against a Tanners side themselves looking tired at the end
of a long season and pushing strongly for third place and
home advantage in the play-offs.
The
amazing quirk in the fixtures that sees the four teams vying
for the fifth and final play-off place all clashing on the
final Saturday, makes it an intriguing finale and Hillians
will need all their spirit and determination, plus a draw
between Dulwich and Walton & Hersham, to beat visitors
Ramsgate and return to fifth spot from their current seventh.
They
probably deserved better on Monday but the hosts always looked
the more potent force and the goal that settled the argument
was superbly taken. It came on 19 minutes when a great ball
from midfield by Mu Mann left Tommy Hutchings goalside of
the defence and he finished with an emphatic half volley.
Hillians
responded gamely but Mann should have done better with a free
header on 27 minutes when Hutchings returned the compliment.
A couple of good crosses by Cotton apart, Hillians best moments
came with Ollie Lockyers inswinging corners from the
right that fully extended home keeper Chico Ramos.
He
was just about up to the job, while at the other end central
defender Jon Boswell failed to trouble Joel Harding seriously
when a free kick bypassed everyone else to leave a one-one.
Gary Croydon took off the ineffective Sonny Cobbs eight minutes
after the break and was later forced to replace both of his
central defenders through injury. It
at least meant they put the home defence under a little more
pressure but apart from a strong claim for handball, they
rarely looked like breaching the home defence.

this season and after last night's victory at 2nd placed Whitehawk
they are now the Ryman League SE Division Champions!

'Close,
no cigar' as season ends with another draw.
An
Olli Lockyer corner is met perfectly by Steve Harper and flicked
on for Hillians to take a 1-0 lead in the first half. A win
today would ensure a finish of 6th in the league ... at worst,
or a play-off spot if Walton & Hersham draw with Dulwich
Hamlet. None of that matters as Ramsgate equalise with a penalty
in the second half and Hill throw everything forward for the
last quarter of the game. Lots of chances are created and
the pressure is kept on. Sonny Cobbs crashes a shot against
the post and other chances go very close ...but it ends 1-1.
A
number of draws that could or should have been wins this season
and we'd have been comfortably in the play-offs. But the truth
is "we came up just a bit short" injuries
in the recent weeks haven't helped. That shouldn't hide the
fact that our finish equals last season's best ever finish
of 7th - on points we are joint 4th!
This
season we have all looked towards the top to the table - all
season, and that's a first. It looks like the Club, it's staff,
it's coaches and it's offficers are now equipped to compete
at this level. The Club is working towards moving to a new
ground and initial drawings have been made. Although the thought
of every new season always comes with unquestioning hope,
.... next season really could be one to be hopeful about!

Burgess
Hill Town Football Club equal their best ever finish of 7th,
and that at the highest level of football the club has played
at. However the feeling is that we should have finished in the
play-offs, with not enough points being gained towards the end
of the season. The general feeling amongst players and management
was that they all 'came up just short'. Lessons learnt
this season will probably include the knowledge that after a
few years at this level we can now say that we can 'punch our
weight' at this level and start to look upwards rather than
down.
If
you think that BHTFC are disappointed, that can't compare with
the feelings of the two Sussex clubs that did make the Play-offs!
Firstly
Bognor, who finished second, could have made sure of automatic
promotion on the last day of season, but drew 1-1 away to Chatham.
They failed to win the league by 1 goal difference! In the play-off
semi final, Bognor then lost at home to Dulwich Hamlet who had
finished 31 points beneath them! So they must spend another
season in Div.1. Most people must have felt some sympathy for
them, they have a good ground and enjoy high attendance figures,
including one this season of over 1300 against Worthing.
I'm
glad I didn't take up the offer of a bet from a friend/officer
of Whitehawk of "any money you like, we'll finish above
you." In their first season in this league the big
spending club finished 3rd - 26 points above BHTFC. But, like
Bognor they went out at the first play-off stage, losing at
home to Leatherhead on penalties. Whitehawk will now have a
season at The Withdean Stadium while their ground is redeveloped
In
the Play-off Final Leatherhead beat Dulwich Hamlet 4-3 after
extra time, a real thriller in front of 1000+ fans.
