RIP
Jim Thompson

|
It
is with great sadness that the club has to announce
the death of former Manger JimThompson.
Jim Thompson had become a cornerstone of the Club
over the last few seasons. Working closely with
Peter Miles and Gary Croydon to establish the club
in the Isthmian league, particularly with the up
and coming players, he will be sadly missed by all
the Club.
At this time our thoughts are with his Family &
Friends.
Gary Croydon had this to say ...
"Jim Thompson loved football and for those
of us who were privileged to work with him, he will
be a huge loss a true Gentleman of the game and
irreplaceable."

after the Tooting friendly...

Neil
Watts has left Burgess Hill and as usual everyone thanks
him for his outstanding services to the club and wishes
him all the very best for his future. Neil came through
the Club youth ranks and won't be forgotton here.
Jamie
Howell was very pleased with the contributions made by Ben
Johnson and Reuben French at the weekend and both will be
featuring again at Shoreham tomorrow (Tuesday).
More
new faces will be on show as well. Jason Fernee who was
with Edgware Town and has moved into the area and, Charlie
Balfe a player from Bognor who has also relcoated to the
Brighton area.
It
was a much better display & Harper scored from the spot

Burgess
Hill player/coach Stuart Tuck fractured his ankle during
Tuesday's friendly. It
may be that Stuart came down on an old hairline fracture,
he will be in plaster for some weeks. Stuart
had been so keen to come back strong this season and has
been working hard on his fitness. Colin Hunwick told the
website that Stuart even tried to run it off !!!
Having
spoken to him, I'm certain we'll benefit from his total
enthusiasm and experience from the dugout and at training
sessions. He is so disappointed at not being able to play
for a while, but that at least his involvement can continue
at close quarters.
He
was at training last night hobbling on crutches and shouting

The
Mid Sussex Times
saw it like this 'Poor start for Hillians' ... It
was a disappointing start to the Ryman League football
season for Burgess Hill on saturday as they lost 2-0
at home to Leatherhead. There
was not much to choose between the teams in a goalless
first half but after the break Hillians gifted the
visitors both goals.
A bad error by new keeper Craig Stoner presented Burgess
Hill old boy Stewart Holmes with the first on 54 minutes
and then a complete misunderstanding in defence enabled
the impressive Tommy Hutchins to lob Stoner after
78 minutes.
As in their pre-season friendlies, Hillians looked
like they will struggle to score goals although they
appeared fairly solid elsewhere.
The closest they came to scoring was a minute before
the killer second goal when skipper Steve Harper hit
a post after good work by Ben johnson and player-manager
Jamie Howell.

New
signing : We have signed the young Brighton & Hove
Albion professional Kane Louis, initially on a months
loan.
Kane, a striker, has been doing very well in Brighton's
Reserves and Youth team and will go straight into
the squad for Saturday's trip to Whitstable Town. Manager
Jamie Howell said he was delighted to get the season
started with a point earlier in the week and now looked
forward to the upcoming holiday weekend and the chance
to add more points and really get the season started
and back on track.
Excepts
from a good Argus interview with Andy Naylor (click
for full article) ...
The
former Dorothy Stringer pupil, spotted playing for Hove
Park Colts at the age of ten, has developed into a promising
forward following a spell as a central midfielder like
his father.
He
has already started a couple of games in the reserves
and was named by former manager Dean Wilkins in the
senior squad for the FA Cup tie against Stafford Rangers
two seasons ago.
Louis
said: "I like getting the ball to feet and turning,
finding nice little passes or taking people on.
"I
should get more goals but I like setting people up as
well. I like to be buzzing all the time.
"I
support West Ham and I used to like Jermain Defoe. I
was annoyed when he went. I always looked up to him
and Joe Cole. I like players that play with freedom
- they just look happier."

(Lloyd

Manager
Jamie Howell can celebrate his 50th appearance for Burgess
Hill after
another good performance. Below,
Lloyd Cotton blasts the ball across the keeper for the
first goal.

The
Mid Sussex Times report ...... Another win for
Hillians ... After opening their winning account in
style at Whitstable on Saturday, Burgess Hill followed
up with a comfortable 2-0 derby victory at home to Eastbourne
Town.
It took them until stoppage time at the end of the first
half to break the deadlock but by then they had created
enough chances to have had the points in the bag.
With Albion youngster Kane Louis offering pace and movement
up front and helping take some of the heat off skipper
Steve Harper, Hillians played with plenty of new-found
confidence.
Harper missed a great early chance and then forced a
smart save from Russ Tanner, while Richard Greenfield
hit the bar with a cross-cum-shot and plenty of other
chances went begging before Lloyd Cotton struck with
an angled drive to send the hosts in with a well deserved
half-time lead.
They were not so impressive after the break and Town
came more into the game, with Gary Brockwell always
looking comfortable on the ball.
But Hillians always had the edge and more or less settled
the issue with their second goal on 61 minutes. Referee
Warren Atkin played a good advantage as Louis played
in Greenfield out on the right and he scored with a
low drive.
Town had their moments up front but could have no complaints
about the final result. |

Preview
of tomorrow's FA Cup game against Epsom & Ewell
FC
After
the impressive and entertaining display seen at
Leylands Park during the midweek game, we can hope
for a BIG turnout for the 'Magic of The Cup'
tomorrow ........ here's what the Manager and the
Brighton Argus had to say today:-
Hillians
boss delighted to land Beck
By Mike Legg
Burgess
Hill player-manager Jamie Howell has hailed the
arrival of former Bognor striker Dan Beck at Leylands
Park as they prepare for the visit of Epsom and
Ewell.
The
former Albion striker spent four years at Nyewood
Lane but has signed for the Hillians as it is closer
to his home.
Beck
made his debut in midweek and Howell said: Im
delighted he has come to us. He can play as a striker
or wide right. He has got a lot of attributes including
pace but he maybe does not score as many goals as
he could, which hopefully he will be able to do
for us.
Steve
Harper (thigh) missed the midweek league win over
Walton Casuals but should be back. On-loan striker
Kane Louis will not figure as the Albion do not
want him Cup-tied.

FA
Cup Vs Bognor Regis Town FC ......... preview news.
|
|
|
A
quick 'phone call to Manager Jamie Howell to get his thoughts
on tomorrow's appetising Cup game with Bognor.
With
a number of our team, including the Manager having spent happy
times at Bognor, it's sure to be a day to remember. Jamie
told the website that he considers both sides play or try
to play 'good football' and that he expects a terrific game.
"It is a game that we have a fair chance of winning and
so progress in the competition - and that is just what we
want to do with Burgess Hill Town Football Club ...... to
progress. This is quality opposition for us, and hopefully
we'll be able to show what we are capable of - this is a great
chance to show what we can do."
I
enquired about Danny Gainsford who missed the midweek game
and about Nick Fogden who was withdrawn during the game ...
both trained last night and are fit, both are certain to be
in the squad. An interesting and exciting addition to the
bench will be Hill legend Ashley Carr. After Ashley's excellent
return to help out the Reserve team he has caught the Manager's
eye and Jamie has selected him to sit on the bench - "He's
a big player for the big occasion and you never know what
20 minutes of a player like that can give you to maybe change
things if needed"
Let's
hope for a big crowd for what is the only FA Cup tie in the
County, let's welcome our guests from Bognor and let's play
our football ........ come on you yellows!

Here's
how the ARGUS reported the game ...
Hillians
shock Bognor
Jamie
Howell put one over the club he served for ten years
when Burgess Hill knocked Bognor out of the FA Cup.
The
Hillians claimed a third qualifying round tie at home
to Eastleigh after winning 2-0 at Nyewood Lane.
Steve
Harper put the Ryman division one south side ahead on
12 minutes with a neat finish but Bognor rallied with
Danny Smith, twice, and Tom Clarke going close before
half-time.
However,
the Blue Square south hosts were undone six minutes
into the second half when Paul Hinshelwoods attempted
clearance fell to Dan Beck who centred for another former
Rock, Ben Johnson, to fire home.
Hillians
boss Howell said: Im delighted. When we
took over we wanted to raise the profile of the club
and hopefully we have done that.
Im
so pleased for everyone at the club. We have a little
reward for all the hard work they have put in.

Man
of The Match : Steve Harper with representatives
of the Sponsor: GAMESTAR
Here's
how Chris Francis of THE MIDDY reported the
game ...
It
was hardly a classic cup tie before a crowd
of 170 but in the end Hillians emerged comfortable
winners.
Hillians: Stoner; M Piper, Fogden, Gainsford,
French; Cotton, Howell, Beck, Johnson; Harper,
Louis. Subs: Greenfield, Westlake, Lansdale,
Elkins, Hunwick.
Dunstable: Taylor, Moss, Burgrove, Nolan, Harrington,
Harker, Barnett, Sinclair, MatyszkiewiczADVERTISEMENT
, Strange, Olaleye. Subs: Billy, Mattland, Cowley,
Richardon.
Referee: Dean Treleaven. Linesman: Andrew Dine,
Patrick Beech.
In the early stages the visitors showed they
would be no pushovers as Hillians were bidding
to add £2,000 to the £4,500 they
banked from their midweek FA Cup replay win
at Bognor.
But in the first 18 minutes young Albion stiker
Kane Louis missed three chances to open his
Hillians account.
If the first two were reasonable the third was
gilt-edged as skipper Steve Harper tricked his
marker on the right and laid the chance on a
plate for Louis, who blazed overwith only the
keeper to beat.
Just before that the visitors had missed a chance
of their own when Krzysztof Matyszkiewicz and
Moses Olaleye got in each others' way on the
edge of the box.
Dunstable soon forgot about that miss, however,
as on 25 minutes they took the lead. Matt Piper
missed a right wing cross by Jonathon Barnett
and Olaleye took full advantage at the far post.
That was only the second goal Hillians had conceded
in five games and it did nother for their confidence
as they struggled to get their game together,
clearly suffering from a FA Cup hangover.
Their next chance of note came on 39 minutes
when Piper did well on the right to play in
Harper at the near post. Unfortunately for Hillians,
the skipper's shot was nearer the corner flag
than the goal.
Harper was much surer with his finish from the
penalty spot a minute before the break when
he put his side level.Fareham referee Dean Treleaven
spotted a push from Ben Johnson's free kick
and was still being berated by visiting players
as they trooped off for half time a minute later.
Richard Greenfield replaced Lloyd Cotton at
the start of the second half but it was Dunstable
sub, the extragavantly named Terry'Jay Jay'
Billy, who was quick to pose problems as Hillians
survived by the skin of their teeth.
At the other end the hapless Louis added another
bad miss to his list as keeper Paul Taylor saved
with his legs and just to add to Hillians' misery,
Greenfield put the follow-up effort wide.
Billy's appearance was brief as he limped off
to be replaced by Ryan Cowley with barely five
minutes of the second half played.
Home keeper Craig Stoner breathed a huge sigh
of relief on 52 minutes when he was way out
of his goal when gifting the ball to Richard
Harker, whose effort from distance was yards
wide of the open goal.
After a scrappy spell, when a long range effort
by Harker was comfortably taken by Stoner, Hillians
went close. Johnson did superbly out on the
right before setting up Dan Beck for a strike
that went inches wide.
Hillians went ahead on 67 minutes when Harper
went up for an excellent corner delivered by
Johnson and although he missed it, the ball
went in off the body of Nick Fogden, who was
standing behind his skipper.
There was almost an air of "Well, it's
about time" from Kane Louis himself as
he finally opened his Hillians account on 80
minutes. He won a free kick just outside the
box and despite it being prime Harper territory,
the skipper left it to Louis to try his luck
and he stroked the ball inside Taylor's lefthand
post with almost nonchalant ease.
Stoner had to turn over one effort and another
appeared to hit the top of the bar before Hillians
went close to adding to their lead. Several
players had efforts blocked before Greenfield
drove a shot across the goal and just wide of
the far post.

Eastleigh: Matthews; Harris, Challis, Riviere, Jordan,
Byles, Adeniyi, Taggart, Groves, Baker, Bodkin. Subs:
Goodhind, F0rbes, Hughes, Brown, Roberts.
Referee:Stephen Daly.Assistants: Liam Walshe, Mark Engelbertson.
It was a big day for Hillians as they were bidding to
claim another Conference South scalp to move within
one match of the FA Cup first round proper.
Player-manager Jamie Howell, as expected, went for experience,
recalling himself and talisman skipper Steve Harper
as well as playing new signing Justin Gregory in place
of youngster Reuben French.
Eastleigh created the first chance when they won a free
kick in a dangerous position just outside the box only
90 seconds in. Tony Taggart's fierce drive beat the
wall but was comfortably turned over by Craig Stoner.
It was even easier for Stoner eight minutes in when
good work by Matt Bodkin released Matt Groves. It was
a good chance but Groves went slightly wide and the
finish was weak.
Hillians' best moment had come just before when Richard
Greenfield almost got goalside of the visiting defence
but was foiled by Andy Harris.
Home hopes were raised on 14 minutes when big Danny
Gainsford flicked on a Ben Johnson corner but Eastleigh
cleared the danger.
Two minutes later James Baker got in a header from Taggart's
cross but again the visiting finish lacked power.
The best move of the match came after 19 minutes when
big Peter Adeniyi played a neat one-two with Baker before
hitting a shot across the face of the goal that went
for a throw-in. It deserved a better finish.
A linesman's flag robbed Hillians and skipper Harper
of a great chance on 22 minutes after great battling
by Lloyd Cotton and a fine pass from Dan Beck.
Two minutes later Gainsford was booked for pulling back
Groves after a long clearance caught out the home defence
badly but Harris blazed the free kick way over.
Hillians really carved open the visiting defence on
29 minutes as Beck's header released Greenfield but
his angled drive was turned over by keeper Jason Matthews.
A minute later Piper's cross was dummied by Gainsford
but Beck's effort at the near post was blocked for a
corner. Even then the danger was not over as Matthews,
under pressure, dropped the ball but recovered possession
before the hosts could cash in.
The home crowd had plenty to cheer on 39 minutes when
their side shocked the Conference visitors by going
ahead and there were no prizes for guessing it was Harper
who was the scorer. But there were plenty of others
involved in a good moved that again opened up the Eastleigh
defence.
Beck, Harper and Cotton combined to set up Greenfield
for a good chance and when Matthews failed to hold the
low shot, Harper picked up the pieces.
It was Hillians who went off at half time in a happier
frame of mind and no doubt looking forward to seeing
some of the highlights on Meridian TV on Monday. But
player-manager Howell would have been quick to remind
his side that nothing was won at that stage.
Eastleigh were obviously keen to get on with the job
as they were out after half long before their hosts
and the officials.
And they made the early running, with Groves' cross
passing across the face of the goal without anyone getting
a touch.
But four minutes in Harper missed a great chance when
released by Beck. Harper was goalside but his finish
was poor as the ball rolled tamely wide.
Five minutes later it was vintage Harper when Beck's
flicked header put him through in an identical position
and this time he lifted the ball effortless over the
stranded keeper.
Eastleigh's misery was almost complete three minutes
later when striker Groves was sent off for a second
bookable offence. His first for a foul was harsh and
he was red carded when shooting long after the whistle
had blown.
Eastleigh boss Ian Baird made a couple of quick substitutions
in an attempt to rally his troops but Hillians were
in determined mood.
On 69 minutes referee Stephen Daly evened up the numbers
when he sent off home centre half Gainsford for a second
bookable offence. If Groves was unlucky then certainly
so was Gainsford as it was a case of mistaken identity
after the referee penalised a challenge by Nick Fogden.
Despite home protestations and then consulting a linesman
a linesman, the referee stuck by his decision.
Biggest cheer of the afternoon came after 76 minutes
when Fogden's driven pass hit referee Daly squarely
on the head and he needed treatment before continuing.
The crowd did give him agenerous round of applause when
he did resume duties.
With the wholehearted Cotton filling in at the heart
of the home defence, they coped comfortably with anything
Eastleigh could offer and Ben Johnson twice almost added
to the lead.
First his low drive appeared to touched around by keeper
Matthews, although no corner was given, and then Harper
did superbly to release him again and this time his
delicate chip hit the outside of a post.
Taggart blazed over a great chance for Eastleigh but
with two minutes plus five minutes stoppage time remaining,
he threw his side a lifeline by heading in Adeniyi's
cross.
After that subs Jamie Brown and Andy Forbes both went
mighty close but Hillians deservedly held out to claim
another prize scalp.

A

October 2008 : Justin Gregory and The
Argus get CUP FEVER too !
"Gregory
keen to help Hillians create history ... By Mike Legg

Justin
Gregory wants to repay Burgess Hill for giving him
a chance by helping them into the FA Cup first round
for the first time. The
Hillians are billing the visit of Ryman premier Harlow
Town to Leylands Park on Saturday as the biggest match
in their history with a possible glamour tie against
Football League opposition awaiting the winners.
Gregory,
33, knows all about romance of the FA Cup and has
reached the fourth round twice but he also knows what
a heartbreaker it can be. The
experienced full-back grabbed national headlines last
season during Havant and Waterloovilles Cup
adventure when the FA prevented him from playing in
a dream tie against Liverpool at Anfield after he
totted up five yellow cards and was hit with a one-game
ban.
The
Hawks slotted in a league match before the game so
Gregory could be available but the FA decided it would
not count and rule him out. Now
Gregory is desperate to bring all his Cup experience
to bear to help Hillians live the dream and appreciates
the irony of getting another chance at a club he only
joined last month after leaving Worthing and spending
time at Lewes and Shoreham.
Gregory
said: Ive always played for a team and
stuck with that team but because of Worthing cutting
their budget I was let go at a time when other teams
couldnt sign me as they had either done their
budget or had their team sorted.
I
was calling in favours, especially with Shoreham,
and it was great to get games as nobody is going
to sign you if youre not fit. But
I was one of those players who drifts from team
to team and Im not like that. People have
got me down as a big money-grabber but I have never
been like that.
I
really appreciate the manager Jamie Howell and the
directors giving me the opportunity to play here.
In the time I have been here I think this is a great
little club with players of exceptional ability
for a team of this level. If we apply ourselves
then I can see us moving out of this league.
I
appreciate the chance and would like to pay back
the people who have given me the opportunity.
I
have had a couple of approaches recently but I like
it here so much that I have turned down playing
at a higher level.
I
like to settle somewhere and give the best for that
team.
Gregory,
a physiotherapist who works from his home in Hove,
feels the Hillians have a chance of causing another
upset after already knocking out Blue Square south
Eastleigh.
He
said: We have to respect Harlow as they are
a league above us but it is a Cup game and we will
be going out there to put ourselves on show and,
hopefully, get through to the first round proper.
Its
great for the club. It puts you on the map but it
also puts some of the younger players in the shop
window. Weve got some good players and if
they excelled on Saturday there would be a lot of
media coverage and they could catch the eye.
I
think having someone like me with experience in
the FA Cup can be valuable to the team.
Like
Gregory with Havant, Hillians centre-half Danny Gainsford
will miss the tie due to a one-game ban but assistant
manager Colin Hunwick is hoping that will serve as
an incentive to the rest of the squad.
He
said: Having Dan on suspension is going to be
really tough for us.
He
is obviously very disappointed but all we can do is
hope to get through to the next round so he will have
the chance to go the furthest he has ever been in
a cup competition.
Player-boss
Howell (groin), Gregory (dead leg) and Nick Fogden
(shin) are all battling to be fit for the game but
Lloyd Cotton (ankle) is definitely out.
Striker
Steve Harper (hip), Matt Piper (thigh) and Ruben French
(ankle) are all carrying knocks but should play.
Kane
Louis has now returned to Albion but Howell will add
Dave Piper and Charlie Balfe to the squad.
The
club are stoking up cup fever after teaming up with
the Little Chef at Hickstead to allow under-16s free
entry and supporters are being urged to wear yellow
as Hillians bid to reach the first round proper for
the first time."

signing and a departure ...
In
a fascinating switch, Manager Jamie Howell reveals
that Richard Greenfield has moved to Worthing FC and
that Richard Hudson is moving in the other direction
and joining Burgess Hill Town FC.
. . . . . . . . . .
As
usual when someone leaves, we express our thanks to
Richard Greenfield for his efforts and his contribution
to Burgess Hill Town Football Club. Richard will still
have many friends here and we will follow his progress
with real interest.
We
welcome Richard Hudson, a player of reknowned quality,
to the Club.
Richard Hudson's picture is from the Worthing Flickr
site - thanks.
UPDATE
Mike
Legg of The Argus writes ...
Burgess
Hill and Worthing have done a swap deal involving
wingers Richard Greenfield and Richard Hudson.
Hillians
Greenfield is on his way to Woodside Road while Hudson
is moving in the opposite direction to Leylands Park.
Winger
Greenfield has been a regular in the Hillians side
this season, scoring three goals, while Hudson has
returned to the Rebels ranks following a long-term
ankle injury.
Hillians
player-boss Jamie Howell said: They want Greenfield
and, to be truthful, I dont want to lose him
but I want Hudson as he can offer us goals. Thats
why we are doing the swap. Richard
has been sensational for us so we will miss him. Richard
Hudson has had his injuries but once he gets his fitness
back he will be a very good acquisition for us.
The
Hillians are in league action at Corinthian Casuals
but Howell misses the trip with a pelvic problem which
will sideline him for three to four weeks. Centre
half Danny Gainsford returns from a two-game suspension.

Within

at Corinthian-Casuals.
In
quite torrential rain the pitch soon becomes difficult.
We lead 3 times and still end up drawing. A bootleg

Who's

soon on the website. Thanks to Terry

to constant Club sponsors PARK

Two

Steve
Harper about to score - until the Casuals keeper pulls
off another fine save.

Phil
Elkins (on in the second half for the injured Danny
Gainsford) hoping to make a nuisance of himself at
a corner late in the game. The frozen, soaking 'keeper
confides to the sole spectator behind the goal (me)
that his shirt now weighs about a stone and he wants
the final whistle!
Casuals
celebrate a point - we are disappointed. I think we
would have taken 4 out of 6 away points this week
- but we are still disappointed.

Match
Report from THE
ARGUS by Howard Griggs
In
a time of hardship for many football clubs, Burgess
Hills future is looking bright.
Seven
months ago the club feared it may go to the wall after
being served with an eviction order from Leylands Park
by the district council. That
misunderstanding, as the club call it, is
now behind them and the future is looking rosy. They
are stable, solvent and working hard on long-term plans
to move to a new ground.
On
the pitch one of the brightest young managers in Sussex
football has moulded Hillians into a team with realistic
hopes of promotion to Ryman premier. A
1-1 draw at home to a Sittingbourne side, who began
the day seven places above them in the table, may be
considered two points dropped by some fans.
But,
having played for 77 minutes with ten men, Hillians
showed great character to prove a play-off place is
well within their reach. Chairman Kevin Newell certainly
believes things are now moving in the right direction.
He said: We have the ground grading required for
Ryman premier. We are in negotiations about extending
our stay at Leylands Park and we are very keen that
Jamie and his team can challenge for promotion this
year.
We
think that a town the size of Burgess Hill, with its
growth potential, should be aiming to be a Conference
south team. We have the catchment area and feel there
is the latent support. In
Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath we have nigh on 60,000
people in our catchment area which would enable us to
sustain a team at that level. Jamie
has done a terrific job but Colin Hunwick (assistant)
and Stuart Tuck are very important as well. We believe
our management team is the envy of a lot of clubs.
Player-boss
Howell and player-coach Tuck are out injured, along
with midfielder Lloyd Cotton, and Hillians resources
were stretched further when Matt Piper was sent off
13 minutes into Saturdays game. Piper
saw red for bringing down Tom Bradbrook as the last
man. It looked to me as though he got a touch on the
ball first, although Howell had few complaints. Home
fans were further infuriated when Danny Gainsfords
header from a Richard Hudson free-kick on 21 minutes
was ruled out for pushing, which only the referee seemed
to spot.
The
excellent Gainsford did break the deadlock on 29 minutes
with another great header following a long throw by
Burgess Hills very own Rory Delap, Jon Lansdale.
Teenage
midfielder Lansdale slotted in at right-back after Pipers
dismissal and contributed well to an excellent team
effort as the ten men took the game to their visitors.
After
the interval, Steve Harpers rasping snapshot was
touched on to the bar by Sittingbourne goalkeeper Matt
Reed who also held Ben Johnsons low shot and then
saved at point-blank range from substitute Phil Elkins.
The
visitors, having survived those chances, drew level
six minutes from time when Bryan Glover scored from
a couple of yards after a goalmouth scramble which followed
Hicham Akhazzans sharp run.
Sittingbourne
should have gone for the win, instead Burgess Hill did
with Harper rifling a shot against the base of the near
post, Johnson having a shot held at the second attempt
and Scott Harris forcing another fabulous save from
Reed with time running out.
Howell,
31, said: It is a little frustrating. When they
got their goal I thought they would be pressing us.
I thought a point would be fair enough but we showed
great character to come back again. It is another game
unbeaten and we will take a positive from that but we
need to start turning some of these draws into wins.
I know what the team is capable of and I dont
think we are achieving that at the moment. If we play
to our capability there is no team in the league we
would be frightened of. Promotion
is the aim. Doing that automatically might be a tall
order now but we have got to be in the play-offs and
that is where I am striving to be.

Nov 2008 . . . . . Hastings
United FC 1 - 0 Burgess Hill Town FC
A
crowd of only 155 saw Hastings progress into the next round
of the Sussex Senior Cup tonight.
Burgess
Hill Town had a great deal of possesion, my spies put the
figure at maybe as much as 75 per cent of the play. However
this didn't create that many clear-cut chances, the most
noteable of those being: Steve Harper's header against the
bar followed, a few minutes later by a shot from an acute
angle that was kept out by the keeper, the resultant follow
up attempt being cleared off the line.
Of
note in second half was a Matt Piper shot that was palmed
away by the keeper.
Importantly,
we suffered no knocks or injuries (we think), this site
will publish an update before the weekend game.
Hastings
had a player stretchered off tonight, let's hope it's not
serious and we send our best to him. The Hastings goal was
scored by Scott Ramsey, a player that I think Jamie Howell
tried to bring to Burgess Hill for this season.
We
play Hastings again (in December) in the League Cup - admission
prices will be reduced for that game.
The

Town FC
FROM
THE BRIGHTON ARGUS .... Burgess Hill player-boss Jamie
Howell admitted he felt hurt and embarrassed after his side
crashed to a 3-0 defeat at Whyteleafe. Howell
was disappointed after Hillians conceded a soft
goal then lost their shape to ship two more in quick succession.
Howell
said: Since I have taken over, we have usually been
pretty good but this is the most disappointed I have been.
We
lost our shape and then it was 3-0 and the game is dead.
We are justmissing the experienced players with the know-how
to win games in these situations.
We
are looking lightweight and to concede a soft goal kills
you psychologically when youre a young team.
Also,
in terms of effort, I felt disappointed for the first time.

27

Jan 2009 . . . . .
Eastbourne Town FC 2 - 1 Burgess Hill Town FC
A
very bright and very cold day when not many local
matches were able to be played. On a quite difficult
and bumpy pitch Hillians fall behind in the first
half, but level the game after the break and make
enough chances to win it. Very late in the game a
penalty is awarded against us ......... 2-1 is the
final score.

The
Hillians goal
After
a long discussion with his Assistant, the referee gives
the penalty. Hotly contested doesn't really describe
the decision. Players and supporters let their feelings
show. A renewal of some Codes of Conduct will surely follow.
THE
MID SUSSEX TIMES
REPORTED THE GAME LIKE THIS ....
Burgess
Hill had two players sent-off after a hotly-disputed injury-time
penalty handed Eastbourne Town a 2-1 victory in a controversial
derby clash at the Saffrons on Saturday.
Deep in stoppage time and with just seconds remaining, a
linesman flagged for handball during a hectic goalmouth
scramble. The visit- ors were incensed and had six players
booked and Nick Fogden and player-manager Jamie Howell sent
off.
When order was finally restored, Town skipper Danny Simmonds
made no mistake from 12 yards to move his side up to 11th
in the Ryman South table and make it a bitterly disappointing
start to the new year for Hillians.
Howell said: "I'm really disappointed with myself because
I know that's not the behaviour we as a club want to project.
"I don't want to make excuses but it was like the goal
that never was and to happen when it did was a devastating
blow.
"We all thought there was a foul on the keeper before
that and just could not believe it when the linesman flagged
for handball. No-one had appealed and we all thought a corner
had been awarded."
Home boss Ady Colwell responded: "I was too far away
to see exactly what happened but the linesman had no doubt
he saw a handball. He indicated a penalty straight away
and the referee obviously backed him up.
"It was tough to take for Burgess Hill but we have
been on the end of a few last-minute decisions and these
things happen in football. It was a good contest in the
second half and I think overall we just about deserved it."
James Norwood started up front for Town and the 19-year-old
gave the visiting defence a tough time in front of the watching
Albion scouts.
Ben Putland almost gave Town the lead with a flick header
from Luke Denton's long throw and Norwood flashed a header
just wide from a Simmonds cross on 15 minutes.
Tricky winger Ben Johnson was the visitors' main threat
in the first half. On 27 minutes his run and cross just
eluded Dan Beck at the far post and a minute later Johnson
had an appeal for a penalty waved away as Denton tackled
from behind.
Beck had an effort well saved by Russ Tanner and Richard
Hudson skimmed the top of the bar from 20 yards as the Hillians
pushed forward.
But Town countered and went ahead after 36 minutes. Chris
Dicker picked out Norwood in the box and the youngster's
brilliant first time effort from 15 yards gave Craig Stoner
no chance.
Lloyd Cotton had a chance to level just before half time
but his close range effort was well blocked by Putland.
The second half began brightly and Hill were soon level
as skipper Steve Harper expertly volleyed home from 20 yards.
Dicker and Town debutant Paul Richardson were booked, while
Fogden saw yellow in what was an entertaining and hard fought
second half.
It was deep in injury time when Liam Baitup went in on Danny
Gainsford and keeper Craig Stoner. The ball appeared to
come off the hand of the keeper but the linesman was convinced
Gainsford handled and awarded the penalty.
The yellow card was flashed six times to players surrounding
the officials and Fogden and Jamie Howell were sent-off.
Furious supporters had to be restrained from coming on to
the field of play before Simmonds converted the penalty
with Fogden, bizarrely, still on the pitch.
Hillians:
Stoner; M Piper, Beda (Lansdale), Gainsford, Fogden; Hudson,
Howell, Cotton, Johnson; Beck, Harper.
Middy Starman: Danny Gainsford. ... Attendance: 388

Jan. 2009 . . . Woeful Hillians crash
MID
SUSSEX TIMES MATCH REPORT
Ashford
Town FC 4 - 1 Burgess Hill Town FC
True,
Hillians were without several key players but there was
no excuse for what was an immensely disappointing 4-1
defeat at Ashford on Saturday.
The hosts may have gone into the game with confidence
high after six straight league wins under their belts
and unbeaten in 10 but with the 'curse' of having Steve
Lovell receive his manager-of-the-month award prior to
kick off, they were ripe for a fall.
But patched-up Hillians, with Mark Pullen back in the
ranks and one of the few visiting players to show any
true quality, were nowhere near up to the task and probably
not helped by the choice of line-up.
Suspended player-manager Jamie Howell opted to play attacking
midfielder Ben Johnson at left back and his lack of defensive
nous was fully exploited by Ashford in the first half.
In addition, young Jamie Westlake was given a starting
chance and while that was well merited, it was clear long
before he was substituted on 65 minutes that this was
not the game where he would show his undoubted potential.
With the likes of skipper Steve Harper and Dan Beck also
struggling to show their quality, young John Lansdale
guilty of some woeful distribution and Lloyd Cotton penalised
for, it seemed, nearly every challenge, whether fair or
unfair, it was a bleak afternoon for those fans who made
the journey to Kent.
Apart from being well beaten, Hillians also had three
players booked and Harper was probably fortunate not to
earn a red card for an uncharactersitically wild challenge
in stoppage time that was surely more to do with frustration
at his own performance as anything else.
Certainly referee Alex Neil and one linesman in particular
hardly helped with some poor decisions but their performances
were no worse than plenty of the visiting team.
Keeper Craig Stoner was undoubtedly exempt from that criticism
as apart from solid handling and calling, he also pulled
off plenty of fine saves, one in the first half being
right out of the top drawer.
Pullen and Matt Piper could also hold heads high but really
it was a team performance that hardly offers much hope
for the rest of the season and would hardly have speeded
the recovery from injury of the watching Justin Gregory.
Home left back Daniel Brathwaite was running the game,
it appeared, and there was no surprise when Ashford went
in front after 14 minutes. The dead ball deliveries of
Charlie Glyde always looked likely to pose problems and
Craig Wilkins prospered with a near post header from one
of his right wing corners.
Harper had finished poorly from an early half chance and
was then unlucky with a neat turn after the goal but really
Hillians were barely in the match and had Stoner not brilliantly
denied Wilkins on 20 minutes, it could have been worse.
The equaliser on 37 minutes was completely out of the
blue as Lansdale did well to lay the ball off with his
chest and Harper showed just what he is capable of by
slipping his marker and finishing superbly low inside
the keeper's righthand post.
At that point Hillians should have regrouped and settled
for what they had. Moving Cotton to left back and keeping
things tight, perhaps should have been the preferred option
from the start but it did not happen and a glaring defensive
gaffe three minutes later put them on the slope to a heavy
defeat.
Somehow a misunderstanding in the middle of the back line
meant they parted for Paul Jones to glide through unopposed
and finish explosively.
On the balance of play it was no more than Ashford deserved
and it was highly unlikely there was going to be a way
back for Hillians from there. And so it proved in the
second half when the visitors were as bad as they were
before the break.
Tony Browne was allowed far too much room as he thundered
a shot against a post on 56 minutes and Wilkins followed
up to grab his second goal of the match.
After that he could easily have completed his hat-trick
before sub Bradley Spice finished clinically late on,
just five minutes after his introduction.
There was still time for Piper and Harper to join Pullen
in the book. The former Hillians skipper had already been
withdrawn probably to avoid picking up another yellow
card as his frustration with the performance and the officials
was starting to reach danger levels.
Hillians:
Stoner; M Piper, Beda, Gainsford, Johnson; Westlake, Cotton,
Pullen, Lansdale; Beck, Harper. Subs: Elkins (Westlake,
65), P Martin (Pullen, 79).
Middy Starman: Craig Stoner. . . . Attendance: 287.

Jan. 2009 . . . Relief for Hillians
MID
SUSSEX TIMES MATCH REPORT
Burgess
Hill Town FC 2 - 1 Folkestone Invicta
Burgess
Hill were desperate for a win and it came on Saturday
in somewhat stormy circumstances.
In their first home programme since crowd problems at
Eastbourne Town on January 3, club officials warned fans
about their behaviour but, ironically, this time it was
visiting supporters who were incensed with the officials
after two of their players were sent off for second bookable
offences late in the game.
Referee Paul Kelly and his assistants were targeted as
they walked off but, thankfully, the plastic tunnel and
the intervention of Hillians chief executive Gary Croydon
averted any physical contact.
The dismissals had no bearing on the result, with Folkestone
actually getting it back to 2-1 when they were already
down to 10 men, and despite a few nerves in the closing
stages, it was a fairly comfortable second win in 14 league
games for the hosts.
Apart from the four bookings for mid-table Folkestone,
there were also yellow cards for Hillians' skipper Steve
Harper, his third in successive games, player-manager
Jamie Howell and the returning Justin Gregory.
Some of the decisions looked highly questionable - Howell,
for instance, was unlucky to be booked for what the referee
construed as a foul - although in the end the home manager
was probably relieved to get away with only that blemish.
Nine minutes before Folkestone were awarded their late
penalty goal, Howell was momentarily distraught when he
thought he had conceded a penalty for a foul on Kieran
Byrne. But the referee saw it as a dive by the visiting
player and issued a second yellow card.
It was in stoppage time when Folkestone No 5 Frankie Chappell
appeared unfortunate to receive similar punishment for
a foul. Hillians were back to something nearer full strength
although they lost both Dan Beck and Ben Johnson to first-half
injuries. Johnson's was particularly painful as he dislocated
a knee and was treated in an ambulance that took some
time to arrive.
He was given gas and air but the left knee had already
popped back and he was sent back into the ground on crutches
and with the knee strapped. Phil Elkins came on for Beck
after only 18 minutes and the loss of Johnson nine minutes
later brought the return of the experienced Gregory after
a 12-match absence. He slotted into his best berth at
right back while Mark Pulling was pushed into midfield.
Apart from one anxious moment when a foul was awarded
against visiting captain Jimmy Dryden, Hillians keeper
Craig Stoner gave another confident performance but it
was crosses that provided the bulk of his work. He did
have a let-off just before his side's opening goal, however,
when Gregory's back pass was overhit and the big keeper
failed to control it.
On 36 minutes there was much relief in the home camp when
they went ahead. James Everitt was harried into an injudicious
square ball that enabled the admirable Lloyd Cotton to
take his time before thumping a firm drive in off the
leg of keeper Jack Delo.
Three bookings came in the last four minutes of the first
half and Hillians made a bright start on the resumption.
Elkins and Harper were close to connecting with good crosses
and young Jon Lansdale, who after the break proved what
a good player he is becoming, failed to capitalise on
a mishit shot by Cotton.
It was only eight minutes in when the important second
goal arrived. Delo was at fault as he was outjumped by
Harper after a neat move enabled Elkins to cross from
the right.
After that it was almost inevitable Hillians would drop
back a little but scares were relatively few and far between
until Gregory was penalised for a foul on Michael Everitt
and Dryden scored his customary goal against the hosts.
In the seven minutes that remained, Pulling almost punished
another Delo error but Hillians were happy enough with
a 2-1 win.
Hillians:
Stoner; Pulling, Fogden, Gainsford, M Piper; Howell, Lansdale,
Cotton, Johnson; Beck, Harper. Subs: Elkins (Beck, 18),
Gregory (Johnson, 27), Carr , Ingham & Hunwick (not
used).
Middy Starman: Lloyd Cotton was his usual all-action self
in the first half but maintaining a similarly high level
of commitment throughout and therefore earning the vote
was Nick Fogden.

Triple
injury blow for Hillians .... Injuries
are ravaging the Burgess Hill squad but player-manager
Jamie Howell is not hopeful of making any new signings
before Saturday's Ryman League trip to Merstham.
He was in contact with three or four players even
before the last two matches cost him injuries to
Dan Beck, Ben Johnson and Phil Elkins.
"I have a few players in mind but at this stage
of the season and under the current economic climate,
I can't be confident of bringing anyone new in this
week," he admitted on Wednesday.
Beck could be in the line for a return this weekend
after picking up an achilles injury on Saturday
but Johnson will be out for a month after dislocating
his knee and young Phil Elkins suffered heartache
when breaking his leg in two places in Tuesday's
3-1 League Cup defeat at Dulwich.
With skipper Steve Harper resting a thigh strain,
Hill gave squad places to young reserves Louis Clark,
Charlie Cooke and Liam Murray. Clark played from
the start in midfield, while Peter Martin made his
full senior debut up front.
Two goals in injury time sent Hillians to defeat
against an experienced Dulwich side who agreed to
host the match because of floodlight time restrictions
at Leylands Park.
Howell said: "The whole side did brilliantly
and I couldn't have asked for more from the youngsters."
Hill started brightly on a Champion Hill pitch that
cut up badly after being used by ground-sharers
Fisher the previous night.
Jon Lansdale forced an early save from Sheikh Ceesay
and on 19 minutes Elkins headed just over after
a good break by Lloyd Cotton. Soon after Elkins
had strong claims for a penalty turned down.
But gradually Dulwich found their feet and Cedric
Ngakan should have scored with a free set-piece
header before skipper Mark Cumberbatch nodded powerfully
wide from a corner.
Craig Stoner pulled off an excellent save to thwart
Junior Kaffo just on half time but was guilty of
a howler on the hour that presented the same player
with the opening goal. Stoner controlled a back
pass but then gave away possession to leave Kaffo
with a gift open goal.
Howell had a penalty claim turned down 10 minutes
later but almost immediately a long ball over the
top caught the hosts napping and Elkins lobbed the
keeper.
Elkins' joy then turned to pain and misery on 80
minutes when he suffered a fracture of his tibia
and fibula.
That led to a seven-minute stoppage and it was during
that added time that Daryl Plummer struck twice
to deal gutsy Hillians a cruel blow.
Hillians:
Stoner; M Piper, Fogden, Gainsford, Gregory; Lansdale,
Howell, Cotton, Clark; P Martin, elkins. Subs: Cooke
(Elkins, 80), Murray (Piper, 87), Hunwick (not used).
Zac Beda should be back for the Merstham game after
missing Saturday's match because he was trialing
for a sports place at an American college. He then
went down with food poisoning and missed the Dulwich
tie.
Skipper Harper and the cup-tied Mark Pulling should
also be back for the Merstham trip as Hillians try
to put even more daylight between them and the two
relegation places.

Feb. 2009 . . . Burgess Hill Town FC 0 - 5 Whitstable
Town FC
A
most bizarre season continues - and it's not over yet
by any means.
The
team is changed around after the last game and Craig Stoner
injures his back during the warm-ups, but the goalkeeper
change has nothing to do with what follows. The
script continues to twist and turn, if you wrote this
and submitted it to TV - they'd say you were crazy!
If
we win 0- 6 at Cray on Saturday I will need counselling.
I
should add that Whitstable were a very very lively side!
None of us want them to go down, mainly because we had
such a nice time there (winning 4-0 had only a little
to do with it) but ....... well, football makes me eat
my words all the time!
|
From
the Mid
Sussex Times ..........
Hillians'
nightmare
A
back injury to keeper Craig Stoner in the warm-up
meant a first game in six years for Burgess Hill
assistant manager Colin Hunwick and it proved a
nightmare as they crashed 5-0 at home to Whitstable
in what was a six-pointer near the foot of the Ryman
South table.
Not that Hunwick could be blamed as he even saved
a second half penalty that would have made it 6-0
and more than turned around Whitstable's 4-0 defeat
at home by Hillians on the second Saturday of the
season.
The visitors were well up for this one and built
a 3-0 lead in the first 25 minutes with goals by
David Cory, Clint Gooding and Ian Pulman. The Oystermen
looked sharp but they were assisted by some woeful
home defending by a much-changed Hillians team.
The visitors scored from their first attack of the
second half, just three minutes in as Pulman notched
his second, and it was getting to embarrassing proportions
11 minutes later when Liam Quinn converted a penalty.
Hunwick spared further blushes when he denied Quinn
a second from the spot on 69 minutes but truly this
was a night which everyone connected with the home
club will want to forget as quickly as possible.

From
the Mid
Sussex Times ..........
It's
a bad day for Hillians
A
gutsy performance at Cray Wanderers was not enough
to save Hillians from another defeat and with results
elsewhere going very much against them, things are
starting to look serious as they struggle to avoid
the drop back to County League football.
Three of the teams who started the day below them
won although two of those victories came against
the two other sides who were below them in the Ryman
South table.
Often in the past fast-starting Cray have blown
Hillians out of the water in the opening half hour
but in this 3-0 defeat it was the visitors who were
by far the most dominating force in that period
of the match.
Lloyd Cotton and Louis Clark both went close and
then on 25 minutes skipper Steve Harper, playing
as the lone frontrunner, missed a one-on-one when
put through by Cotton.
But the tide was starting to turn and on 34 minutes
Cray had their first chance when captain Jamie Kempster
set up Tyrone Stirling for a powerful shot that
was touched over by the returning Craig Stoner.
Five minutes after that Hillians were behind as
the same home pair combined to leave Richmond Kissi
a simple tap-in at the far post.
Ashley Carr was introduced for midfielder Luke Gedling
at the start to the second half, which again opened
brightly for the visitors. On the hour Harper was
again clean through and this time was denied by
the legs of keeper Glen Knight.
But then in little more than a minute Stoner saved
a deflected Kempster shot and thwarted Kissi, on
the latter occasion being grateful to see Callum
O'Shea blast the rebound high and wide.
But on 65 minutes disaster struck when Hillians
defender Nick Fogden was a little unlucky to be
sent off for a handling offence. O'Shea was off
target from the resulting free kick and then missed
a good chance from Stirling's cross.
Any visiting hopes expired on 75 minutes when Lewis
Wood made it 2-0 and 10 minutes later was gifted
a second when Stoner spilled a shot he should really
have saved comfortably.
Even then, there was time for Harper to miss another
one-on-one and leave Hillians with nothing to show
from a spirited performance in which youngster Clark
again underlined his potential.
Hillians: Stoner; M Piper, Fogden, Gainsford, Gregory;
P Martin, Howell, Cotton, Gedling, Clark; Harper.
Subs: Carr (Gedling, 45), Murray and Hunwick (not
used).

Not
too often you'd be happy with a point, but this one was
hard fought for and well earned. Although we sit too near
the bottom of the league table, performances like this
are feeding the confidence again.
